Barenaked Ladies Cover Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight’
Barenaked Ladies may have set the record for best-attended Undercover session when they stopped in Chicago this June. Following tour mate Colin Hay and his well-received performance of “She’s My Best Friend,” the Canadian quartet drew what appeared to be every employee of Onion Inc. into the studio—longtime fans reliving high-school memories standing side-by-side with lookie-loos who maybe just wanted to hear “One Week.” On the latter count, the band didn’t disappoint (watch for video of that performance at a later date), though the star attraction here was the hauntingly sparse, Americana-influenced take on a hauntingly sparse, divorce-and-not-drowning-followed-by-public-shaming influenced Phil Collins classic. Make sure you stick around for the drum fill.
