What You Should Know About Betsy DeVos, Trump’s Education Secretary Pick
If you have school age children, or plan to anytime soon this should make you fearful. The School vouchers that DeVos will cram down the public’s throats are a scheme to sweep public school funding right into parochial church coffers.
It’s a a way to slip creationism, David Barton’s twisted wingnut mythos history, and anti-science views into schools whole cloth because a big part of charter schools is lack of oversight, and it’s noteworthy that DeVos fought oversight for charters tooth and nail. Public schools have their issues, but they do not fail as often and as badly as most private schools.
The thing our species does better than any others is to nurture and teach our young for a very long time, and that thorough public education a big part of our success as a species and a country. If we throw our children to these Luddite voucher fiends we will tearing at the foundations of greatness in our country.
President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly tapped Michigan philanthropist Betsy DeVos to be his education secretary.
“I am honored to work with the President-elect on his vision to make American education great again,” DeVos tweeted Wednesday. “The status quo in ed is not acceptable.”
DeVos, an advocate for school vouchers, has chaired the Michigan Republican party and played a key role in some major education policy decisions there in recent years. But unlike former D.C. schools chief Michelle Rhee and charter-school leader Eva Moskowitz, two others Trump considered for the education secretary position, DeVos has kept a relatively low national profile. She has neither worked in public education nor chosen public schools for her own children, who attended private Christian schools.
