So is Windows 10 safe from this malware? I haven’t run window personally since before 2000 when I bought a new Sun Blade 100 as my PC, but my son does (even with Steam there aren’t enough games on Linux for him :)

Yes, it was patched a month ago - as long as you didn’t disable automatic updating, you’re safe.

Ok, I’ll be seeing him later and will make sure he hasn’t done so. Frigging microshaft…

(yes, I know there are vulnerabilites in everything (well, possibly not VMS but that’s a different world) but do they have to be such idiots in Redmond?)

No, in fact Windows 10 is not safe from this malware. It is protected against being infected via SMBv1 but you can be infected by clicking on an infected payload received via email, or possibly via infected removable media.

Windows Defender (or whatever they call it these days) should be able to protect you against these secondary infection mechanisms, assuming it’s up to date.

The Chaos computer club managed to infiltrate VMS systems because DEC left a default password on X.25 logins. You were right the first time — there are vulnerabilities in everything.

but do they have to be such idiots in Redmond

Why do they have to be such idiots in Fort Meade?
