The Major’s #MemorialDay Message (Especially for #Millenials) for 2017
Well, The Major’s meat-space doppelganger has FINALLY, after decades, gotten the proper medication to treat his ailment! And the best part? It feels like it’s actually working! (Say Hallelujia!) It’s almost like “The Sleeper Has Awakened!”…
Now by now, if you’ve been following me on Twitter, you see that I’ve been using Sci-Fi memes/clips in my Tweets, most notably from Sci-Fi series from 1990’s television. I firmly believe that the 1990’s Sci-Fi shows were The Golden Age of Sci-Fi on TV. I have a particular fondness for three iconic shows in particular:
Star Trek: Voyager
Babylon 5 (A most excellent series, due to JMZ himself)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (especially when Sisko gets his beard…)
So, for all you millennials who haven’t seen these show, do yourselves a favor: quit taking stupid selfies and pictures of the food you are eating (nobody cares-trust me on that), gather some of your friends together and binge-watch both Babylon 5 and ST:DS9.
You’re welcome.
Now, back to the topic at hand…..Memorial Day. Here’s what WIkipedia says about Memorial day in the US:
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.[1] The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May,[2] originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers.[3] By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.[1] It marks the start of the unofficial summer vacation season,[4] while Labor Day marks its end.
Now Memorial Day isn’t just a uniquely American thing: TIME has an article on how other counties celebrate their version of Memorial Day.
But to me, Memorial day just shouldn’t be about recognizing our fallen war heroes.
Memorial Day should be about celebrating loved ones and friends who have passed on to whatever heavenly reward awaits them. Mexico has Cinco de Mayo, after all.
So Memorial Day should be celebrating all of those who are not around us, whether or not they have gone on to their spiritual reward, or are missing due to distance. (The Major, unlike some un-enlightened people, that there are universal thruths in all religions. If you want to know more, buy this book. You can thank The Major later.
Which leads me dealing with friends missing from distance (and yes, this is for you, macc, wherever you may be this long weekend.) Unfortunately, The Major has to stand watch on Sunday, so he won’t be able to participate in the long weekend…
I know that my behavior was wrong, and for that I truly apologize. You see, my long lost friend, I have been fighting to put a leash on my Black Dog for decades. I now have a right tight leash on the Black Dog, so that’s no longer a problem.
However, I have some unfinished business with you-and since you said the last time we met to “Keep in Touch”, that what I’m doing right now….
Do you recall what I told you over the phone back in 1991? If not, let me jog your memory some (The Major has been blessed/cursed with a memory that remember details with precise precision)….
Then I remember one of the major themes in “Babylon 5”-“All Love is unrequited”:
Over the years I think I finally got a complete picture of you. I wish I could share it with you now, but The Major has his hands full with his new calling. There are times that I hear…
But then, remembering the one there in Babylon 5, finds that he has no choice:
I didn’t have a choice back then, and I don’t have one now. C’est la vie, mon amour….
So folks, consider what The Major has said in this post. As I currently have pinned on my Twitter:
Hate is Learned Behavior, taught by our parents and their social groups. We must unlearn that behavior if the world is to survive.
In today’s world, this message is needed now more than ever. That’s why I am following this new calling. The Major listens to this song every morning as he gears up for work in meat-space, and it inspired me to create this blog:
Have a safe Memorial Day, all. The Major, signing off……
