First Courts Martials Possible in Marines United Case
The so-called Marines United case involves a closed Facebook page that had tens of thousands of active duty and veteran members (from all services).
The point of the page was to share nude photographs of female service members and veterans (along with some civilian women), almost exclusively without their permission. They were taken secretly, stolen from social media or other sources, &c.
The page was exposed by a blogger who writes on military issues, who has subsequently been harassed and threatened.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) accuses the Marine Corps of being too lenient or not doing enough. She considers the cases to be a severe disruption of good order and discipline in the military, and must be dealt with as harshly as any other disruption of that nature.
Depending on the specific woman involved, this non-lawyer presumes one could conceivably bring charges of Article 120a of the UCMJ Stalking, Article 120 Rape
(if the act of posting photographs included threats of bodily harm whether sexual or no), Article 78 Accessory after the Fact, Article 81 Conspiracy, Article 92 Failure to Obey an Order or Regulation, Article 133 Conduct Unbecoming an Officer and a Gentleman (for officers involved), and Article 134 General Article, which includes conveying threats, and conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline.
Maybe throw the whole UCMJ at these guys.
First Courts-Martial Possible in Marines United Case (more at Marine Corps Times):
US Marine CorpsOne service member could face a court-martial and another has been administratively discharged in connection with the Marines United investigations, said Marine Commandant Gen. Robert Neller.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., questioned Neller about the latest investigation developments at Thursday’s Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.
Marine veteran Thomas Brennan first reported on March 4 that troops and vets among the 30,000-member Marines United Facebook group were sharing nude photos of female service members, veterans and civilians, and threatening some of the women in the pictures.
