The Hero Sailor Who Died Saving Shipmates. or as Trump Calls Them “Immigrant Scum.”
As the destroyer Fitzgerald wallowed in the ocean, gravely wounded, a senior sailor who referred to the younger sailors as “my kids” threw himself into the flooded compartments, yanking the stunned victims to safety.
This heroic, chest-thumping “Support Our Troops!” story, seemingly made for the kind of flag-waving propaganda the right specializes in, would be blaring from Fox and Limbaugh and Drudge and Trump’s Twitter feed, but for one inconvenient fact:
Along with Tran Huynh from Vietnam and Oakville, Connecticut, these particular seven included Gunner’s Mate Seaman Dakota Kyle Rigsby, 19, from Palmyra, Virginia; Yeoman 3rd Class Shingo Alexander Douglass, 25, from Okinawa and then San Diego; Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Noe Hernandez, 26, from Guatemala and then Weslaco, Texas; Fire Controlman 2nd Class Carlos Victor “Hitch” Ganzon Sibayan, 23, from the Philippines and then Chula Vista, California; Personnel Specialist 1st Class Xavier Alec Martin, 24, from Halethorpe, Maryland; and Fire Controlman 1st Class Gary Leo Rehm Jr., 37, from Elyria, Ohio.
Yeah, that’s right. The sailors were immigrants. With brown skin.
Well, what are they reporting on, then? Let’s check out the front page of Drudge, generally regarded as the pace-setter for the entire right-wing echo chamber:
Uh-huh. I see.
The idea that American sailors are actually brown-skinned immigrants? That makes the faux-patriot, flag-waving Bubbas all blink in confusion, as their tiny brains reject reality.
And a white soldier sacrificing himself to save a buncha dirty brown Messican/gook immigrants? If that’s the story … well, that’s not going to get the proper amount of clickgrift, now is it?
