$15 Magnet Hack Turns Smart Gun Into Regular (No Actually a Really Dumb Gun)
Hacker conferences are always good for some upsetting news right? From Defcon by way of Gizmodo
Some of us are apt to one day shoot another one of us by way of robbery or murder. Or stab, choke, crash, poison or bludgeon. I submit high technology as effective gun control is nowhere near a good answer at least for now. Once improved, I like having guns like this on the market, especially for military police and civilian security or leo. A fair expectation is that these will be extra expensive for the foreseeable future.
The hacker, known as Plore, recently discovered that he could shoot the gun without wearing the paired watch by placing just $15 worth of strong magnets next to the weapon. He also managed to disable the weapon remotely by jamming radio signals so it couldn’t shoot. Smart guns cost thousands of dollars, but Plore said it only took $50 to perform all his exploits of the weapon…
Going on the record to say requiring this feature as a condition of sale at all would be all wrong. Once a gun is in the room at all the only reliable safety lies within those present. The reason I changed the headline is because this early model is a difficult gun to actually use at all or in any kind of hurry. Improvements will surely come apace.
