Editorial: Kobach Is Desperate for Trump’s Approval
Kris Kobach has been running a Trump-style gubernatorial campaign since the day he announced. From his empty insistence that there’s a “culture of corruption” in Topeka to his argument that the Legislature’s decision to repeal Gov. Sam Brownback’s tax cuts was “disastrous” to his weird obsession with immigrants, he has revealed himself to be a sort of mini-Trump in all the critical areas. He even regurgitates Trump’s populist rhetoric, ensuring voters that he’s the only guy who can “drain the swamp” in Topeka.
In a recent Breitbart column, Kobach said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s defense of the players demonstrated “that he not only has no clue why NFL viewership is in the tank, he also has no clue what the National Anthem is all about.” From the invective to the petty absorption with ratings, that line sounds like it was lifted straight from a Trump speech.
The White House has taken notice of its dutiful parrot in Kansas. Donald Trump Jr. will be arriving in Overland Park next month to attend a campaign dinner and VIP reception with Kobach. Of course, Kobach isn’t worried about Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian lawyer during the campaign – that’s all “much ado about nothing.”
