Unshaken Defiance  Jan 4, 2018 • 5:18:45pm

Darn straight it never died. The devices change. The media. The motive and to a degree the tricks to bring realism and art remain the same, all the way back to oils. Film makers, cinematographers and photographers of merit go to the masters of painted light for inspiration.

There is a genre of oil painting that was the eyewitness news of it’s day. Usually grand events, often religious or civic, these show the interface of art and reality as espoused by a human with a skill. With an eye to realism rather than abstraction. I went to the Getty and saw the exhibit. Very inspiring. I’m gonna guess some of those guys were criticized along similar lines.

When an art becomes popular and it’s creation democratized like what we see with cell phone cameras there is a repeatable cycle of a lot of popular dreck, some great work, and a then an inevitable popular falling out. Serious practitioners keep doing what they do, irrespective of the pendulum of popularity. Those of us that aspire to artistic quality, pro level, gallery sale quality work hone our skills, practice and shoot and publish, moving up an inch, an image at a time. I like it like that just fine.

Speaking of those kinds of things, I saw your photo page the other day a while after you’d posted it. I do think you should consider trying the Sony again but be sure to rent at least one native lens as well. Even the best adapters on the market are not as good as the average native lens unless you’re trying for a specific effect. I do that sometimes with my my Russian LTM lenses on my Olympus m4/3 body.

re: #2 William Lewis

Good point. It does deserve a review at it’s best. Alas, that’s about my whole experiment budget for now. When I must shoot 4k video, I will rent a 5D mark 4. Someday I might own a 4k body but the tech changes so fast… Saving up for EF lenses as we speak.

For stills? 22 megapix APS-C will do.
