The LGF RunDisney-StarWars-DarkSide Meet Up and Half Marathon
Klys, Mrs DM and I had just the grandest time. Great company, lots for us all to talk about. And a wonderfully laid back, easy and fun race.
Klys can tell her own story which also involves another race the day before.chuggin’
This was my first disney race. They are extremely well organized and i was glad i was with someone who had experience there, knew the layout, the places, the routine, what to expect, and would act as tour guide through the course. This was also my first time inside disney.muggin’
Mrs dm and i drove up to orlando on saturday and we met up with klys late in the afternoon. She had been doing the parks (and the previous day’s race) and so was a little wilted. We sat for a while talking about all manner of things not covered in 2 years of emails.along the way
When we inevitably got around to running and race planning mrs dm’s eyes glazed over as expected. The lines for a dinner anywhere on disney were like an hour long so we found the Sea Dog Brewing Company off campus. Spent another couple of hours eating and (soft) drinking. Food, family, cats, hobbies, and other interests.
The race gun goes off at 5:30AM. We (she and I) had to be up for 3AM buses so we made it an early night and tried to get some sleep. I got like maybe three hours and was done. I’ve found that lack of sleep the night before a race doesn’t have all that much impact, so I was off to my bus early. There was a line of them and the first one was already almost full. No one was smiling, few were talking. I asked if it was the airport bus……nothing. I wonder if disney gets you up 2 hours early just because they can….
Meanwhile mrs dm could catch a 7 o’clock bus for the finish line, so Zzzzzzzzz.
We were so eager that we were both off the first buses and had no trouble finding each other in the vast expanse of whatever parking lot we were in.
We milled about with the others, chatting with folks klys had met at the race the day before. Eventually they opened the first gates that led to the next set of gates (the corrals).
We got in early so we were right up front. We staked out some ground and sat for another hour or so. we talked about this and that - running, racing, other stuff, while they tried to drown us out with very loud music and “entertainment”.
Finally the gun goes off and 8 minutes later, our wave of humanity is released through the starting gate. 15k people, they have to stagger the starts.smilin’
There were entertainment and attractions along the route - which klys pointed out to me as not only a disney newbie but star wars too.
A mostly flat course, we held a conversational pace which is a good sign of low stress running. Considering she had run a 10k the day before, and that it was humid (to a non-floridian) we turned in a respectable performance.winnin’
Mrs dm took a short video of us crossing the finish, then we procured our hard-won bling (medals) and made for the snacks.
This was no small thing for me. I was 7 months out after a leg injury in december 2015. Coming back, i was not doing well for a long time. Klys inspired(s) me with her enthusiasm and fresh outlook toward running. (Wrench and some of you others have as well.) It has helped me to push myself to stay with it and finally, finally be much stronger and farther along than i was before.
We planned this race last June. And here we are running together.
My niece noticed “I love how you both stuck your landing with your arms up even while everyone around you looked so unhappy”
We went to disney springs after we got cleaned up. Had kick-ass ice cream sundaes (hey, you burn those calories, you deserve it!)
Stay tuned.klys bought a hat farewell at the airport
