Libyan Hell-on-Earth Migrant Camps a Glimpse of Our Border Future?
Well, this will curdle your morning coffee:
When new migrants and refugees arrive in the detention centers, they say they are often tortured or raped with the promise that it will stop if their families back home just send more money.
The Daily Beast interviewed several people who had arrived from Libya who shared the same story of exploitation. All of them were tortured with electric shock—the men often to the testicles—to ensure that there was no more money to be sent. When it was clear that there wasn’t, they were sold as slaves or released to smugglers to make room for others.
Despite this ongoing atrocity, the hard-right Italian government is sticking to its policy of denial:
[Italian authorities] insists that turning away Europe-bound migrants is the only effective way to discourage illegal departures from Libya, and says a sharp fall in migrant arrivals proves he is right.
Until June 2018, Italy took in the vast majority rescued by humanitarian groups.
But Salvini has since closed Italian ports to rescue ships, much to the dismay of both humanitarian groups, international organisations and other European countries.
According to Rome’s interior ministry, 155 migrants have landed on Italian shores in the year to date, compared with 2,730 in the first 21 days of 2018.
Does anybody doubt that this would make Stephen Miller very, very happy? That he’d jerk himself off to photos of the bodies of dead Central American in the desert?
That the entire MAGA-hatted cohort wouldn’t explode in delirious delight at hearing that thousands of brown people were being tortured, raped and killed?
