‘Many People Agree With Me’: Trump Digs in on Racist Tweets
Let’s be crystal clear: if you are one of the “many people” who agree with Trump on this, then you are undeniably racist. There’s a reason it’s against the law for employers to ask country of origin questions at interviews (because IT”S RACIST for those who need these things spelled out.) There isn’t waffle room left here, our president and the hardened core of his extreme supporters are racist.
On a side note, it looks like the avalanche of shame tweets from this am worked and even the ever ambiguous and detached observers in our press corps are calling it what it is: Racist.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Unbowed by searing criticism, President Donald Trump on Monday emphatically defended his tweet calling on four Democratic congresswomen of color to go back to their “broken and crime infested” countries. Condemnation of his comments “doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me,” he declared.
Trump responded to questions at the White House after his Sunday tweet assailing the lawmakers, all of whom are U.S. citizens and three of whom were born here. He has been roundly criticized by Democrats who labeled his remarks racist and divisive. A smattering of Republicans also have objected, though most leading Republicans have been silent.
Trump, resurrecting language not prevalent in the U.S. for decades, said Monday that if the lawmakers “hate our country,” they “can leave” it.
