#Thegreatpoolpondconversion - 200607
This week we started working on the deck border.
Our plan was to water blast some slate, wheel barrow it over, lay it down, repeat.
Turned out we had enough slate already on the deck to make a good dent.
So no powerwashing.
We got about a third of the way around. We started at the left side of the waterfall pool and worked counterclockwise.
This is another one of those things that doesnt look like much but is actually a lot of work.
It was hot but no sun. So no gazebo to move around.
For this first pass around the pond we tug, pull, fold and tailor the liner into place.
We trim the excess liner as we go. It only needs to overlap the deck by about a foot.
(This is actually a big milestone - finally trimming to fit.)
Then each piece of slate has to be lifted, moved, rotated, maybe flipped, until just the right way to lay it becomes obvious.
We’re only doing about 1 width of slate. Just enough to hold down the liner and cover most of that one foot flap.
So ⅔’s of the way to go for the first pass.
Then a second pass to make it about 2 feet wide overall and more slate on top for a depth of about 3” and so the liner doesnt show through the gaps and cracks.
For most of the rest it will be power wash, barrow, lay, repeat… so we’ll see how fast that all goes.
Back in January we were measuring and remeasuring three different ways to get the proper liner dimensions. We were worried of course. Too big is just a waste of time and $. Too small and then what? Well Webb’s Water Gardens in Maryland were spot on. Even with all our folds and contours, at the max span of length and width, the overlap to the deck is just one foot and doesn’t even need to be trimmed.
On May 22, we ordered 50 planters from Home Depot. They gave us a 3 week delivery date. Not Amazon, nor anyone else had what we wanted, so we went for it. We picked them up today. The wrong size, the wrong shape, the wrong quantity. Before re-ordering (and getting ready to wait 3 more weeks), we checked Amazon. Now they’ve got em. They’ll arrive Friday, and be delivered right to the pond.
We’re still working on the list of plants.
