It was Father’s Day this weekend. Nothing to do with what work we did.
Last Wednesday we received an order of floating plants that went right in, er on.
We know we’ve done a few things out of order.
One is covering a half or more of the water surface with floating plants. So we’re sort of working backwards on this.
Duckweed will hopefully propagate quickly and the fish won’t eat too much of it.
And Large Sensitive Fern, also called Botswana Wonder or Water Pea (Aeschynomene fluitans)
It looks like we received a defective battery so we’re sorting that out.
We were not thrilled with the front bed so saturday and sunday we built another crib frame.
A little differently this time. We built it first then put it in place:
The two large plants are Porterweed.
The smaller ground cover is Railroad Vine.
This was a big week for wildlife.
There are lots of field mice running around in the tall grass in the field. We’ve seen 3 or 4 in more than one location. Maybe they’ve got a whole maze of tunnels and there are separate clans getting ready to do battle.
We saw four armadillos at the back corner of the yard. It’s away from the pond so probably not related to anything we did.
Two big, two small - adults / kids probably.
There is an obvious hole dug under the fence so they’re probably living on the other side under all the fallen trees and branches.
There were four Florida parrots at our feeders. We hear them around sometimes. this was the first time feeding.
The (a) green heron came back three times over three days.
Today, Wednesday, for 2-3 hours.
It managed to land one of our medium sized comet goldfish.
It flew off 30 minutes later without eating it. No doubt tonight someone else will.
In our desire for more quick solutions to shade and surface area cover, we came upon the idea of floating mats or floating pot planters.
We found some easy diy designs so we’re gonna give that a try in a few weeks.
We’ll call ours “Floating Island” - though she is not Katherine Hepburn. But if she is, I am still definitely not Spencer Tracy.
