Half-Staff Notice: Death of Abe Shinzo
The US Flag is currently at half-staff as a mark of respect for those killed in a mass-murder on July 4 in Highland Park, Illinois. That proclamation expires on July 9 at sunset.
As a mark of respect after the assassination of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo of Japan, President Joseph Biden has ordered the US Flag be placed at half-staff until sunset on July 10, 2022.
The US Flag Code recognises that the president or a state governor may order the flag to half-staff in respect of great service by a foreign national. Prime Minister Abe Shinzo restored full diplomatic relations with the United States after WW2, with President Biden visiting the atomic bombing site at Hiroshima and meeting with survivors of the attack, followed by Prime Minister Shinzo visiting Naval Station Pearl Harbor and visiting with survivors of that attack. Those visits mark the first-time leaders of the two nations have visited those sites in the other nation.
