Russia Might Allow Nato Supply Lines to Afghanistan
BUCHAREST, Romania — In a sign of a possible thawing of the frosty relations between Russia and the West, Moscow and NATO reached a deal here Friday that would allow the alliance to ship non-lethal supplies across its territory into Afghanistan.
NATO had been seeking the important transit deal with the Kremlin even though many were predicting possible fireworks with President Vladimir Putin’s arrival Friday for a key session of the NATO-Russia Council.
Mr. Putin and the 26-member alliance have been butting heads over the U.S. plan to base a missile defence system in Eastern Europe, that NATO endorsed Thursday, as well as its ambitions for eastward expansion into countries that were once part of the Soviet Union.
