A militia group in Wisconsin is planning to target African-American Democrats at polling places in order to suppress the vote and keep Republican governor Scott Walker in office.
A visit to the group’s Facebook page features makes it clear exactly who they are targeting. All of the pictures on the page feature African-Americans. The group is trying to get African-Americans who may have outstanding warrants arrested in order to keep them from voting. The group wants people to report those they suspect of having warrants out on them to the police on election day, “Do the community a favor and keep an eye out for people wanted on warrants and report them to the police on election day.”
The “poll watchers” also plan on harassing and following people who they suspect of being wanted on warrants to their homes. The plan seems to be to use the police to intimidate African-Americans into not voting in November’s election.
Google has gone to valiant lengths to convince us that rumors of Google+’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, but Google is no longer forcing new Gmail users to connect their account to a Google+ profile - yet another move that could signal the end for Google’s troubled social network.
Since I’m not really a Facebook user (have an account but abandoned it a couple of years ago) I like that there are some sites that let you register with just as easily with your Google+ account. Other than that Google+ is useless for me.
They’re gone ‘til November.
After swiftly dispatching with their labors of keeping the government funded and authorizing the training of Syrian rebels, Congress headed home Thursday night for its scheduled break for the rest of the month.
And next month. And part of the NEXT month.
The U.S. House has been in session for roll call votes a total of 92 days in 2014 - or 35% of the year up until now. (They had “pro forma” sessions - without any legislative business - for an additional 25 days.)
The Senate’s been working slightly less, holding roll call votes on just 87 days this year, with an additional 30 days of “pro forma’ sessions, when most lawmakers aren’t in Washington.
Those of us working a typical 5-day work week, with public holidays, would have been clocking in for a total of somewhere around 181 days during that time.
The reports on the near uselessness of tort reform to contain healthcare costs will come and go, and conservatives will continue to offer it as an answer, anyway. Objective reality need not apply.
Do you want the good news first, or the bad news ? :-)
Bad news: the flow moved out of the heavily forested area it’d been moving through and northeast into grassland, and started a brushfire. So far more than 100 acres have burned, but there are no structures at risk. Crews are working to contain the fire and put out hotspots.
Good news: the lave flow has slowed considerably, advancing less than 75 yards since yesterday. However, those wacky guys at the USGS caution that it’s unknown if that’s due to a decrease in output from the source at Pu’u O’o, or if the lava is just filling a small depression in its path. It was noted that there’s noticeable deflation at the Kilauea summit which is consistent with reduced output - but that could change at any time.
Current projection is for the flow to reach Ap’a Street (Pahoa outskirts) on October 2nd; Pahoa Village Road (town center) on October 7th; and Highway 130 (your commute is fucked) on October 10th. But needless to say these projections are revised daily.
Last night, researchers at Malwarebytes noticed strange behavior on sites like last.fm, The Times of Israel and The Jerusalem Post. Ads on the sites were being unusually aggressive, setting off anti-virus warnings and raising flags in a number of Malwarebytes systems. After some digging, researcher Jerome Segura realized the problem was coming from Google’s DoubleClick ad servers and the popular Zedo ad agency. Together, they were serving up malicious ads designed to spread the recently identified Zemot malware. A Google representative has confirmed the breach, saying “our team is aware of this and has taken steps to shut this down.”
Malware served through ad units (or “malvertising”) is nothing new, but this incident is notable because of the unusually broad reach of the attack. “It was active but not too visible for a number of weeks until we started seeing popular sites getting flagged in our honeypots,” Segura says. “That’s when we thought, something is going on.” The first impressions came in late August, and by now millions of computers have likely been exposed to Zemot, although only those with outdated antivirus protection were actually infected.
Although there were 911 calls of gunfire during the search areas, troopers said they have not yet seen Frein or exchanged any gunfire.
The authorities seem confident that he is still in the area and that it is only a matter of time until they find him. In the press conference a couple of hours ago they hinted that they have found more than just the rifle but wouldn’t go into any details.
This is a compilation list of what selected friends and family are planning to TIVO, your mileage or favorites might vary. The people who normally give me feedback on SYFY, TNT, and BBC are MIA atm so those listings are missing too, but I think most of their stuff comes later in season - November and January. CBS, NBC and others are holding cards to play later to counter punch later season shuffles and/or replace shows that bomb. (e.g. final season of The Mentalist doesn’t have a time slot yet.) If you have other recommendations, corrections, or feedback let them fly in comments.

The ad was made by political consultant Rick Wilson and paid for by a group called Americans for Shared Prosperity, which is headed by wealthy California businessman John Jordan.
For me, weird is putting it mildly.
