Bharatiya Janata Party is projected to emerge as the single largest party in the Delhi Assembly elections winning between 32 and 42 seats in the 70 member House, said a post poll survey today.
The poll conducted by CNN-IBN-CSDS-The Week said the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress party would receive a major drubbing getting only between 9-17 seats and debutant AAP notching 13-21 seats.
Indicating their disillusionment with the Congress government, 70 per cent of the respondents were against the Sheila Dikshit government getting another chance while only 23 per cent respondents wanted to give her another chance, the poll said.
Pro-Europe protesters flocked to Kiev’s Independence Square on Sunday for a rally that organizers were hoping would swell to 1 million people, piling pressure on Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich to turn back from seeking closer ties to Russia.
The rally, due to start at 12 p.m. (1000 GMT), will increase the tensions in a standoff between the government and protesters furious over its decision to dump a landmark pact with the European Union in favor of a trade deal with Moscow.
In a gesture likely to infuriate Yanukovich, protesters hoisted a huge portrait of his jailed arch foe Yulia Tymoshenko onto a towering New Year Tree, festooned with anti-government placards, that overlooks the tent ‘village’ on the square.
Thailand’s main opposition party announced Sunday it was resigning from Parliament to protest what it called “the illegitimacy” of the government. The move deepens the country’s latest political crisis a day before new street demonstrations that many fear could turn violent.
Democrat Party spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut told The Associated Press his party could not work in the legislature anymore because the body is “no longer accepted by the people.”
The minority Democrats are closely aligned with anti-government protesters who in recent weeks have staged the country’s biggest rallies in years. The demonstrations are aimed at ousting Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, whose democratically elected government came to power in a landslide vote in 2011 that observers said was free and fair.
Atomic experts representing the United Nations nuclear watchdog landed in Tehran on Saturday to inspect a plant recently opened to them, after access was denied for years.
The team from the International Atomic Energy Agency is to inspect the Arak heavy-water production plant on Sunday, after a November agreement between Iran and the agency allowed for expanded monitoring. The plant produces heavy water for a plutonium reactor that has not yet been finished.
Iran has said the Arak plant is for energy production; however, if it became operational it would produce plutonium that could be used in a nuclear weapon.
In the November accord, Iran agreed not to produce fuel for the plant, install additional reactor components there or put the plant into operation.
These excerpts are from one of the many defining speeches that Nelson Mandela gave, from the Rivonia trial where he was found guilty of sabotage. In it he gives a clear answer to accusations of communism, and the reasons the ANC chose sabotage over other forms of active resistance. After he was sentenced he would not be heard again for decades.
I have always regarded myself, in the first place, as an African patriot. I was born in Mthatha, 46 years ago. My guardian was my cousin, who was the acting paramount chief of Tembuland, and I am related both to the present paramount chief of Tembuland, Sabata Dalindyebo, and to Kaizer Matanzima, the chief minister of the Transkei.
As I understand the state case… the suggestion is that Umkhonto was the inspiration of the Communist Party which sought by playing upon imaginary grievances to enrol the African people into an army which ostensibly was to fight for African freedom, but in reality was fighting for a communist state.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact the suggestion is preposterous. Umkhonto was formed by Africans to further their struggle for freedom in their own land.
Our fight is against real, and not imaginary, hardships or, to use the language of the state prosecutor, so-called hardships. Basically, we fight against two features which are the hallmarks of African life in South Africa and which are entrenched by legislation which we seek to have repealed.
These features are poverty and lack of human dignity, and we do not need communists or so-called agitators to teach us about these things.
File under: HOW DID I miss this?
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s (R) awkward attempt to link Vice President Joe Biden to the GOP’s policies against womens’ reproductive health was smacked down hard by Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) on Tuesday.
“Democrats like to complain about a Republican ‘war on women,’” Gingrich said on Crossfire, before mentioning Biden’s visit to a Japanese e-commerce company, DeNA, in which Biden asked a group of women working there if their husbands “like them working full-time,” if they were married, and if they were allowed to work from home.
“How do you explain Biden’s inability to stay in touch with reality?” Gingrich asked Wasserman Schultz, who expressed amazement that Gingrich would link the “war on women” term with Biden, the author of the Violence Against Women Act, which was been staunchly opposed by Republicans even after passing in the House in February 2013.
Seems some action could be take to protect private or sensitive information, but not the financials ….
A judge in New Mexico has ruled that government agencies don’t have to disclose an audit of more than a dozen mental health providers under investigation for possible overbillings and fraud, because the audit contains law enforcement materials that are confidential.
State District Judge Sarah Singleton in Santa Fe agreed with Attorney General Gary King’s office in a lawsuit by the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government seeking to force disclosure of the audit, which the state used to freeze Medicaid payments to the behavioral health providers.
Only a small part of the more-than-300-page audit has been publicly disclosed by the Human Services Department and the attorney general, which is investigating the allegations against providers of mental health and substance abuse services.
The judge said that withheld portions of the audit are law enforcement materials protected from disclosure under the Inspection of Public Records Act.
Legislators have sharply criticized the administration of Gov. Susana Martinez for failing to give providers an opportunity to review and respond to the fraud allegations before freezing their Medicaid payments. The department has contracted with Arizona companies to take over for some of the suspended providers.
Roger Goodell Makes How Much?!
According to IRS salary transparency rules, tax exempt organizations can pay no more than fair market value compensation for services. It is also because of the fact that the NFL files taxes as a trade association that the public gets to know exactly what its executives make.
Those very tax forms reveal that current NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made nearly $29.5 million in 2011 alone. That’s almost triple the $11.6 million he pulled the year before. Those big checks almost guarantee that Goodell is perhaps the only sports commissioner who makes as much as or more money than the athletes themselves. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, for instance, made a mere $18 million by comparison, and former Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning had a salary of $23 million in 2011.
RT America reached out to the NFL, NHL as well as the PGA on multiple occasions. None of the leagues chose to comment on their tax exempt status.
I understand this article is written for women, but it works both ways. We need to remember that. Men are drawn into abusive relationships as well.
Are you in a relationship with a psychopath? You might think that’s something you’d know right away by the red tint of evil in the person’s eyes, the swastika tat on the forehead, or the insistence on discussing serial killers over dinner. But nope! Psychopaths can be extremely charming and come across like Prince Charming at first. So unless you know the signs, you’d probably get sucked into the life of a psychopath and not know who he or she really was until you are completely sucker punched. Here are 10 signs you should look out for to quickly identify a psychopath.
1. Flattery like you’ve never heard before. Psychopaths move extremely quickly. On the first date, he’ll probably tell you that you are stunningly beautiful, unbelievably intelligent, and uproariously witty. He will play into every fantasy and insecurity you have. If you think you’re fat, he will tell you how much he loves your body. If you think you’re shy, he will laugh at every lame attempt at a joke and tell you you should have been a comedian. This is called “love bombing.” It’s the idealization phase he gets you hooked on, and it’s the phase you will spend the next however-many months or years trying to get back once he abruptly shuts it off.
If we are to make progress, we must look at the big picture and actively involve men.
We must recognize that society as a whole pays the price for violence against women, because it greatly impacts our collective ability to generate growth and prosperity. It is well documented by poverty experts that women are the biggest untapped natural resource for development. Societies that emphasize public policies promoting gender equality tend to be more prosperous and less violent.
I, as a father of three boys, know that changing our societies’ norms and attitudes that often excuse gender violence starts with me. It starts with us. As men, understanding our role in shaping the systems that create this problem should motivate us to be allies for change.
We must shift from our role as silent bystanders and speak out alongside women. We can do this by being less defensive, looking inward and questioning our own attitudes. By learning to understand how our language and interactions affect those around us, and how it may perpetuate sexism.
