Californian lawmakers passed a law on Thursday requiring universities to adopt “affirmative consent” language in their definitions of consensual sex, part of a nationwide drive to curb sexual assault on U.S. campuses.
The measure, passed unanimously by the California State Senate, has been called the “yes-means-yes” bill. It defines sexual consent between people as “an affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity”.
The bill states that silence and a lack of resistance do not signify consent and that drugs or alcohol do not excuse unwanted sexual activity.
The number of refugees from the Syrian civil war has risen above three million, the United Nations refugee agency said Friday, calling the crisis “the biggest humanitarian emergency of our era.”
More than a million people have fled in the last 12 months alone, the refugee agency said, counting only those who registered as refugees. The total number is believed to be significantly higher. Countries surrounding Syria that have borne the brunt of the exodus estimate that several hundred thousand more Syrians have escaped across their frontiers seeking safety.
Lebanon, with a population of less than five million, has taken in more than 1.1 million Syrian refugees, while Jordan has 608,000 and Turkey 815,000, according to the agency, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Tens of thousands more fled to Iraq over the past three years only to face new dangers from the onslaught of Islamic militants based in Syria.
The Icelandic Met Office has raised its aviation warning level near the Bardarbunga volcano to red after an eruption began overnight.
Scientists said a fissure eruption 1km (0.6 miles) long started in a lava field north of the Vatnajokull glacier.
Civil protection officials said Icelandic Air Traffic Control had closed the airspace above the eruption up to a height of 5,000ft (1,500m).
The volcano has been hit by several recent tremors.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk called today for the parliament in Kiev to begin an immediate debate on possible NATO membership for the country. The United Nations raised its death toll estimate for the conflict to almost 2,600.
“Putin’s decided he can pretty risklessly consolidate the separatists’ territory by openly sending in his own troops,” Jan Techau, director of the Brussels office of the Carnegie Endowment, said in a phone interview. “His goal is creating a statelet he can turn into a frozen conflict.”
Standoff in Ukraine
President Barack Obama said Russia faces “more costs and consequences” because it “has deliberately and repeatedly violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Ukraine. Obama ruled out “a military solution to this problem.” The Kremlin has repeatedly denied any involvement in the unrest.
Jim Wright at Stonekettle Station has another article worth reading:
But after hours upon hours of scrolling through the documents, it became clear that the ISIS laptop contains more than the typical propaganda and instruction manuals used by jihadists. The documents also suggest that the laptop’s owner was teaching himself about the use of biological weaponry, in preparation for a potential attack that would have shocked the world.
The information on the laptop makes clear that its owner is a Tunisian national named Muhammed S. who joined ISIS in Syria and who studied chemistry and physics at two universities in Tunisia’s northeast. Even more disturbing is how he planned to use that education:
The ISIS laptop contains a 19-page document in Arabic on how to develop biological weapons and how to weaponize the bubonic plague from infected animals
The son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy pulled his five children out of Clark County, Nev. schools on Thursday after getting into a disagreement with administrators over the ability to carry pocketknives at school.
The five students are the grandchildren of Cliven Bundy, a rancher who has previously engaged in armed clashes with the U.S. government over the use of federal land. The incident that sparked the removal involved Bundy’s 15-year-old granddaughter whose school refused to allow her to bring a pocketknife to school, according to television station KSNV.
Tom Corbett running for re-election in Pennsylvania as Governor,is so far behind his Democratic rival Tom Wolf he can’t see the tail lights. This grifting do nothing worthless puppet of monied interests is reaching for something, anything, to be a legacy besides the complete and utter ineptitude and duplicity of his joke of an administration. He says he increased funding, not cut it, to education. No. I think the other Republicans who stood shoulder to shoulder with this toad, now have some dancing to do. Tom Corbett has a great history as a valued member of the GOP. He takes care of the people who take care of him. Problems? What problems? He also let the Gas Corporations ride free without any severance tax like every other freaking state that gets drilled. Shortfall? We could have done what?
I’m just happy that this asshole is gone, baby, gone come 2015 and that the healthcare expansion that the citizens of Pennsylvania should have had years ago will now become reality. Kiss off, scumbag. One Last Kiss.
Extended triangulation period ends.
Hillary Rodham Clinton broke nearly three weeks of silence Thursday on the fatal police shooting of an unarmed Missouri teenager, saying his death and the violent protests that followed resulted from frayed bonds of trust in a racially divided community.
The remarks by the former secretary of state during a speech to a technology group were her first about Michael Brown’s Aug. 9 death in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson.
As a potential Democratic presidential candidate, Clinton was criticized for waiting so long to talk about the black teen’s shooting by a white police officer after a midday confrontation on a street.
Clinton lamented the shooting and the numerous tense confrontations that followed between angry protesters and heavily armed police.
Here are a couple of really good youtube science channels that I just found out about. They both were created by Henry Reich. He’s the sole creator of MinutePhysics and a co creator of MinuteEarth. They have a similar style, but deal with different subject matter.
With all the stupidity on Youtube, and the internet in general, its nice to know there are a few genuinely educational channels out there. This is made even more so, given the fact that most of what passes for “educational TV” nowadays is a joke. Television networks like the Discovery Channel often seem to care more about money than facts, and have even lied to scientists, to get them to appear on their dumb shows.
Both these youtube channels on the other hand, appear to be totally legit. They’re also family friendly, which is another positive thing about them. Both channels are great, especially if you have children who or interested in science, or if are a mom or dad who wants to spark your kid’s interest. The videos are also incredibly cute, and many of the videos include some nice humor if you watch the cartoon while listening.
First lets check out MinutePhysics
Here are just three videos he posted on that channel.
