Three business operators in Fairbanks have been federally charged for selling misbranded Spice, or synthetic marijuana — the first time the government has sought to charge Alaska head shop owners for selling the over-the-counter drugs.
Brandon Michael Newman, operator of The Scentz; Richard Stanley Krakowski of Mr. Rock & Roll; and Nan Young Siddiqui of The Smoke Shop have been charged with “delivery of misbranded drugs received in interstate commerce,” a misdemeanor. Newman faces one count; Krakowski and Siddiqui face two counts each, according to charges filed in mid-November.
Interstate commerce, the movement of the drugs across state lines or from foreign countries, is necessary for federal jurisdiction, said Assistant U.S. Attorney James Barkeley. Under the law, “drug” is defined as anything intended to have or that has an effect on the human body, he said.
“It’s a very broad definition that encompasses non-prescription drugs, over-the-counter substances and other substances — stuff outside the realm of what we normally see in federal court,” Barkeley said. “It covers a lot of things, but the key allegation is that these packets of Spice … were falsely labeled as something that was not intended for human consumption when in fact they were sold expressly for that purpose.”
Nigel Farage’s local Ukip branch has rebuked the BBC for its ingrained liberal bias in holding a straw poll on the party leader in front of a London mosque. The mosque in question was Westminster Cathedral.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Matthew 7:16 KJV
Since the alleged banana terrorist is still alive, we could have guessed that he is white even without the picture.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A man is facing a felony menacing charge, because two Colorado sheriff’s deputies say they thought a banana he pointed at them was a gun.
Nathan Rolf Channing, 27, was arrested Sunday, according to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel.
According to an arrest affidavit, Mesa County deputies Joshua Bunch and Donald Love said Channing pointed the fruit at them while crossing a street.
The deputies said they feared for their lives even though they saw that the object was yellow. Bunch wrote in the affidavit that he has seen handguns in many shapes and colors.
He wrote that Love was drawing his service weapon when Channing, of Fruitvale, Colo. yelled, “It’s a banana!”
Yes, the man accused of pointing a banana at police is from Fruitvale.
And yes, one of the police officers he pointed the banana at is named Bunch.
And, no, we didn’t make this up.

Exposing the Grey Seal as a Major Predator of Harbour Porpoises
Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranding in large numbers around the southern North Sea with fatal, sharp-edged mutilations have spurred controversy among scientists, the fishing industry and conservationists, whose views about the likely cause differ. The recent detection of grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) DNA in bite marks on three mutilated harbour porpoises, as well as direct observations of grey seal attacks on porpoises, have identified this seal species as a probable cause. Bite mark characteristics were assessed in a retrospective analysis of photographs of dead harbour porpoises that stranded between 2003 and 2013 (n = 1081) on the Dutch coastline. There were 271 animals that were sufficiently fresh to allow macroscopic assessment of grey seal-associated wounds with certainty. In 25% of these, bite and claw marks were identified that were consistent with the marks found on animals that had tested positive for grey seal DNA. Affected animals were mostly healthy juveniles that had a thick blubber layer and had recently fed. We conclude that the majority of the mutilated harbour porpoises were victims of grey seal attacks and that predation by this species is one of the main causes of death in harbour porpoises in The Netherlands. We provide a decision tree that will help in the identification of future cases of grey seal predation on porpoises.
Talk about Chilling effects…
In 2012, Thomas G. Smith had seen an Arena Police Department Facebook post thanking community members for helping to detain two black children. Smith responded with a profanity-laced message about how Arena officers were racists.
A federal lawsuit obtained by the StarTribune said that Officer Nicholas Stroik had deleted Smith’s comments, and the comments of others who accused police of targeting suspects based on race.
Smith then received a call from officers, who wanted to know if he had posted the comment. Smith replied that he had posted the Facebook message, and that he had meant it.
Unsurprisingly, the stocks of major oil producers were in the firing line as their profits are hugely dependent on the price of oil they extract. Royal Dutch Shell, for example, fell 4.3 percent while Total SA dropped 4.1 percent.
Oil prices have taken a battering this year for a variety of reasons including the return of sustained supplies from countries like Iraq and Libya, the increase in shale gas production, particularly in the U.S., as well as signs of a slowdown in some of the world’s leading economies, notably China and Europe.
Analysts think some OPEC countries — Saudi Arabia in particular — don’t mind oil prices falling too far as they could make it uneconomical for shale gas producers. That in the long-run could boost OPEC’s market share.
Two men indicted last week on federal weapons charges allegedly had plans to bomb the Gateway Arch — and to kill St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch and Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson — the Post-Dispatch has learned.
Sources close to the investigation were uncertain whether the men had the capability to carry out the plans, although the two allegedly did buy what they thought was a pipe bomb in an undercover law enforcement sting.
The men wanted to acquire two more bombs, the sources said, but could not afford to do it until one suspect’s girlfriend’s Electronic Benefit Transfer card was replenished.
