Arizona is scrapping the lethal injection protocol used in the execution of Joseph Wood, which lasted nearly two hours and took 15 doses. Officials announced the change Monday after an internal review of the troubling July execution, even as they insisted it was “handled appropriately.”
The Department of Corrections will no longer use the two-drug combination of midazolam and hydromorphone and will instead rely on a three-drug cocktail that includes midazolam. The agency also has one-drug protocols, but it hasn’t been able to obtain those chemicals because manufacturers refuse to sell them to put prisoners to death.
Witnesses to Wood’s execution described him gasping for more than an hour, and an emergency hearing on whether to stop the procedure and try to resuscitate him was under way when the inmate was finally pronounced dead. In a statement Monday, Corrections Director Charles Ryan said an outside review of the execution showed it was “done appropriately and with the utmost professionalism,.”
The long-held vision of connected home appliances is becoming a reality. White goods makers such as Electrolux, Haier, and their competitors in the AllSeen Alliance are gearing up refrigerators, ovens, washing machines, and more that ride WiFi networks and run Linux.
The group will stage a demo of connected appliances at the Consumer Electronics Show in January showing products on the market or on the way. Most are based on a new generation of low-cost 802.11n WiFi chips.
They will communicate with each other as well as cars, smartphones, and cloud services via open source software originally developed by Qualcomm under the name AllJoyn. Qualcomm gave the code a year ago to the Linux Foundation to maintain under the name AllSeen.
Microsoft has corrected a software bug in its Azure Cloud Storage that, when deployed widely on Nov. 18, triggered a massive outage. In some cases the error triggered infinite loops and tied up storage servers, dragging down much of the Azure cloud into a drastic slowdown.
As a result, connection rates to Azure on Nov. 18 dropped from 97% to 7%-8% after 7 p.m. Eastern in Northern Virginia. The Azure data center in Dallas suffered a complete outage for a short while. Data centers in Europe didn’t recover until deep into the following day.
Microsoft had tested the storage update code before deployment, but contrary to its own best practices, Azure administrators rolled it out to Azure storage services as a whole instead of “flighting” — limiting the roll-out to small sections at a time.
Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) and Wireless Maingate AB (Maingate), a Sweden-based provider of machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity and data management services, today announced that Sierra Wireless has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Maingate for US $90 million in cash. The transaction is expected to close in February 2015.
“The acquisition of Maingate is a strong strategic fit for Sierra Wireless, helping us to accelerate our device-to-cloud mission with the addition of leading edge wireless M2M connectivity and managed services,” said Jason Cohenour, Sierra Wireless President and CEO. “Maingate has a strong base of top-tier M2M customers and a proven technology platform that we believe will enable market expansion and accelerated services growth through our channels.”
Notably, none of these intellectually dishonest statements quote or link to any actual rhetoric spoken by Mayor de Blasio, Eric Holder, or President Obama. That is because none of them has uttered so much as a single word that even hints that violently attacking a police officer, let alone murdering one, would be justified. Suggesting that their words are responsible for this murder is discrediting. Even the weaker claim that their words “embolden criminals” is absurd, both as a matter of logic and as a statement made amid historically low crime rates.
With regard to the particular crime of killing police officers, “the number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty—that is, killed with felonious intent by a suspected criminal—plummeted to 27 in 2013, its lowest level in decades.” That is the Obama/Holder record on this issue. We needn’t speculate about whether their rhetoric has proved dangerous for police. We know that it has not.
Following an outrageous murder of two policemen who seem to have been good cops, it’s emotionally understandable that most people nod along to statements about NYPD officers being “New York’s Finest.” There are a lot of good cops in New York City. There are, as well, a lot of bad cops in the force of 34,500. People who hate all police officers because some act badly are being prejudiced and irrational. It is also irrational to extol everyone who wears an NYPD uniform despite the fact that some of them abandon whistleblowing colleagues when they need backup, accost an innocent kid with racial slurs and physical threats, retaliate against a fellow officer who exposes systemic misbehavior by trying to have him involuntarily committed to a mental institution, or assault women with pepper spray for no reason. Unions that fight to keep even misbehaving officers from being fired bear some responsibility for the reputation that the NYPD has among its critics, as does every cop that observes misbehavior by colleagues but stays silent. Only by distinguishing among police officers—praising the ones who do their jobs honorably and capably, and disciplining or firing the ones who fall short—can the proposition that the profession is worthy of respect be rationally defended.
Interestingly, elsewhere in the piece, Friedersdorf quotes a Reason column by Nick Gillespie that “addresses a whole range of attempts to assign responsibility for this killing to someone other than the perpetrator himself”. The column only specifically references criticism leveled at Rand Paul by CCJ. No mention of all the high profile shots taken at Obama, Holder and DiBlasio. If libertarian love interest Paul hadn’t been poked by a moron would Gillespie have written that column?
My name is Abe Van Dyke. I am a photojournalist who was arrested by the Milwaukee County Sheriffs department for being on Interstate 43 photographing protestors on 12/19/14 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This is my story.
Pope Francis blasted the Vatican’s top bureaucrats at an annual Christmas gathering, accusing the cardinals, bishops and priests who make up the Curia of “spiritual Alzheimer’s” and of lusting for power at all costs.
“Sometimes, [officials of the Curia] feel themselves lords of the manor — superior to everyone and everything,” Francis told the Curia’s assembled members, according to Vatican Radio, which carried a report of the meeting titled “Pope Francis: Christmas greetings to Curia.”
The Curia, the administrative body of the Roman Catholic Church, is dominated by Italians who oversee the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics. Francis, an Argentine, is the first non-European to hold the papacy in more than a millennium. The former Cardinal had not worked in the Curia before his election; he has made reform of the Vatican a major part of his agenda.
“The Curia needs to change, to improve. … A Curia that does not criticize itself, that does not bring itself up to date, that does not try to improve, is a sick body,” he said.
There are those who worry about his future. I’d simply remind them that he survived decades in the hell on Earth of the Argentine Junta. The Cardinals have far more to fear than he does. May the good lord keep him safe and in his job for decades to come.
God bless you, Bishop Francis of Rome.

Louisiana Governor’s Prayer Rally Will Bring Together Despicable Christian Leaders to Accomplish Nothing
Americans United for Separation of Church and State made clear that Jindal had completely crossed a line:
When you became Governor, you swore an oath to support the Constitution and laws of the United States. The invitation letter makes a mockery of that oath by flagrantly violating the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Governor Jindal, you were elected to represent all of your constituents, not just the Christians. Your proselytizing letter under the seal of your office and the State of Louisiana represents a flagrant disregard for large portions of your constituency, and of the requirements of the Constitution of the United States. For these reasons, we ask that you withdraw this invitation and all governmental support from “The Response — Louisiana.”
The next problem is that a prayer guide that was offered up on the rally’s website (since removed) blamed gay marriage and abortion for natural disasters. Because advancements in civil rights caused Hurricane Katrina.
