Big waves like those fit for surfing are not what we think of when contemplating the Arctic Ocean. The water is ice-covered most of the time — and it takes large expanses of open sea plus wind to produce mighty surf.
So the fact that researchers have now measured swells of more than 16 feet in the Arctic’s Beaufort Sea, just north of Alaska, is a bit of a stunner. Swells of that size, researchers say, have the potential to break up Arctic ice even faster than than the melt underway there for decades thanks to rapid global warming.
The wave measurements, using sensors beneath the surface communicating via satellite, were recorded by Jim Thomson of the University of Washington and W. Erick Rogers of the Naval Research Laboratory in 2012 and reported in an article in Geophysical Research Letters this year.
President Barack Obama feasted on working-class delicacies in Kansas City on Tuesday night as he sought to bond with people unaccustomed to having the ear of the most powerful man in the world.
His presidential motorcade steered to Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque shortly after landing at Kansas City International Airport.
Once there, he met with four White House-chosen Kansas Citians over a half-slab of ribs, a Bud Light and conversation about how what he does in Washington registers in people’s lives.
Russia, facing the toughest round of Western sanctions imposed since the Ukraine crisis erupted, has adopted a nonchalant public stance, with President Vladimir V. Putin emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and a new poll released Tuesday indicating a “What, me worry?” attitude among the bulk of the population.
But beneath that calm facade, there is growing alarm in Russia that the festering turmoil in Ukraine and the new round of far more punitive sanctions — announced Tuesday by both European nations and the United States — will have an impact on Russia’s relations with the West for years to come and damage the economy to the extent that ordinary Russians feel it.
Until now, Mr. Putin’s tactics seemed to be working. Russia was feeding the separatist insurgency in Ukraine without leaving distinct fingerprints — able to press Kiev to come to terms while avoiding a rupture with Europe that would alienate Russia’s business elite. But that strategy is beginning to crumble, battered under successive shock waves generated by the crisis.
Israeli artillery fire hit a United Nations-run school serving as a shelter in northern Gaza early Wednesday, killing at least 15 Palestinians taking refuge there, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a spokesman for the Israeli military, said Wednesday morning he was looking into what struck the school.
Witnesses said at least two shells landed at Abu Hussein school, located in the middle of the Jabaliya refugee camp, around 4:30 a.m., hitting the stairway and a classroom.
Jabaliya, the most densely populated area in the Gaza Strip, has come under artillery fire since Tuesday afternoon. The shelling has killed at least 50 people there in the past 24 hours, according to the ministry.
One thing we have learned in the current conflict is that Hamas has three main sponsors: Turkey, Iran, and Qatar. So when Bergdahl was released and the five taliban bigs were released into the “custody” of Qatar, we basically handed terrorists over to a terrorist supporting country. This linked story is strictly for background and was written two months ago, before many of us knew true extent of Qatar’s hamas connections. But our leaders should have known.
Well we see it at home with false Breitbart posts and a host of other places (anyone remember the false pieces on ACORN). NOW, in an effort to drive a wedge between Jewish American voters, 70% of whom voted for President Obama in 2012 we have this nightmare:
Reporter Oren Nahari at Israel’s Channel One reported that he received a leaked conversation between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu:
The following is an English translation of the Hebrew account of the talk given in the report:
Barack Obama: I demand that Israel agrees to an immediate, unilateral ceasefire and halt all offensive activities, in particular airstrikes.
Benjamin Netanyahu: And what will Israel receive in exchange for a ceasefire?
BO: I believe that Hamas will cease its rocket fire — silence will be met with silence.
BN: Hamas broke all five previous ceasefires. It’s a terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of Israel.
BO: I repeat and expect Israel to stop all its military activities unilaterally. The pictures of destruction in Gaza distance the world from Israel’s position.
BN: Kerry’s proposal was completely unrealistic and gives Hamas military and diplomatic advantages.
BO: Within a week of the end of Israel’s military activities, Qatar and Turkey will begin negotiations with Hamas based on the 2012 understandings, including Israel’s commitment to removing the siege restrictions on Gaza.
BN: Qatar and Turkey are the biggest supporters of Hamas. It’s impossible to rely on them to be fair mediators.
BO: I trust Qatar and Turkey. Israel is not in the position that it can choose its mediators.
BN: I protest because Hamas can continue to launch rockets and use tunnels for terror attacks -
BO: (interrupting Netanyahu) The ball’s in Israel’s court, and it must end all its military activities.
This was immediately picked up by the Times of Israel and then went viral throughout the Right blogosphere where Republicans are doing everything they can to try to sway Jewish voters away from the Democratic Party.
Now, anyone reading this conversation who is familiar with either of the actors (Pres. Obama and PM Netanyahu) can immediately tell this is false. Rather, the thing reads like some Rightist conspiracy dream. It doesn’t resemble the style of either man and/or their discussions with each other even when the two were extremely at odds.
Of course the White House AND the Government of Israel are denying the content of this snippet of a thirty five (35) minute discussion saying “Neither reports nor alleged transcript bear any resemblance to reality.” Both governments tweeted out their denials within minutes after the story broke at that the Times of Israel.
The question of course remains: “How low does one have to sink to completely create a false story, in the Middle of a War, to try to manipulate sections of the American voting public? And if they will do this, what else will they try before November 2014?”
I don’t think this is news to anyone nor is it a surprise that the Republicans and their Rightist allies are so desperate that they will concoct stories out of thin air to try to discredit the administration, but, I am really surprised that most of their followers simply accept these fabrications as truth without question. AND even those who do question things still trust these sources as places to be informed.
One other thing… IF this is an Israeli only report than it is very sad that a completely made up story makes it to a press that is generally more reliable than any other in the region (except for Arutz Sheva or Israel Hayom). BUT, if there is an American Official spreading this, than that is straight out sedition where an American creates a complete lie out of thin air regarding the President and then presents that lie to a foreign nations press in order to subvert an alliance.
What depths will the Right sink to in the coming months as the election draws near… who knows? One thing is for certain, I think that from here on in, if the Right reports that the sky is blue, the informed reader should still go outside to make sure that it is indeed blue.
Meet Kathy Weppner. She’s a Republican running for Congress in New York’s 26th District, which is greater Buffalo if I’m not mistaken.
Local Buffalo resident Alan Bedenko took a screenshot in case Kathy loses the courage of her bigoted convictions, at least on Twitter.
.@KWeppner Sometimes it's just easier to let them speak for themselves.
