The key to winning the Latino vote is rejecting immigration reform, conservative pundit Ann Coulter said Tuesday.
Coulter offered her bad advice during an appearance on Fox News personality Sean Hannity’s radio show, where she continued to rail against the possibility of a bipartisan immigration reform bill passing the U.S. Congress
“We can win Hispanics,” Coulter said. “We can’t win them if we keep bringing in the foreign ones.”
Ann Coulter lays it all out - if you, and by extension Republicans in Congress don’t agree with her point of view, particularly on immigration, then the GOP deserves to die.
Democrats terrify Hispanics into thinking they’ll be lynched if they vote for Republicans, and then turn around and taunt Republicans for not winning a majority of the Hispanic vote.
This line of attack has real resonance with our stupidest Republicans. (Proposed Republican primary targets: Sens. Kelly Ayotte, Jeff Flake, Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio.) Which explains why Republicans are devoting all their energy to slightly increasing their share of the Hispanic vote while alienating everyone else in America.
It must be fun for liberals to manipulate Republicans into focusing on hopeless causes. Why don’t Democrats waste their time trying to win the votes of gun owners?
As journalist Steve Sailer recently pointed out, the Hispanic vote terrifying Republicans isn’t that big. It actually declined in 2012. The Census Bureau finally released the real voter turnout numbers from the last election, and the Hispanic vote came in at only 8.4 percent of the electorate — not the 10 percent claimed by the pro-amnesty crowd.
The sleeping giant of the last election wasn’t Hispanics; it was elderly black women, terrified of media claims that Republicans were trying to suppress the black vote and determined to keep the first African-American president in the White House.
She, of course, has it completely backwards and ignores evidence that undermines her premise.
Even many Republicans realize that changing demographics threaten Republican strongholds, including Texas and could turn those states into battlegrounds, further limiting the party’s reach beyond a regional party.
Republicans have repeatedly engaged in a war on women, looking to undermine their right to choose. They have voted innumerable times to restrict the right to abortions, engaging in more votes at the state and federal level than any number of jobs bills that would help improve the economy.
Republicans have repeatedly engaged in efforts to restrict access to the polls, including various efforts to require identification to vote. Now, while I tend to agree with efforts to show some form of identification to prevent fraud or abuse, Republicans take this further and are looking to depress turnout in minority areas.
As for why there might be a decline in Hispanic voting in the past national election could be that those voter depressing techniques are starting to hit home - the size of the Hispanic population isn’t declining. In other words, ignoring the Hispanic community is done at your own peril.
The reason that the GOP would deserve to die is because its current composition in Congress has steadfastly refused to compromise on pretty much everything. Negotiations and compromise are verbotten. Cutting deals is sufficient to demand calls for excommunication from the rank and file.
And this brings me back to Coulter’s reasoning that the party deserves to die. She thinks that those who are willing to compromise and work out an immigration deal are the reason that the GOP should die out. Instead of those obstructionists who refuse to do any manner of governance unless they get their own way and have in the past allowed the debt ceiling to be exceeded resulting in a credit rating loss for the US Government, Coulter takes her ire out on Republicans who realize that compromise and governing go hand in hand.
Coulter’s approach is to marginalize a fast-growing population and instead claim that the amnesty approach is nothing more than a sop to big business and that the GOP wouldn’t benefit from reaching out to the Hispanic community. Moreover, Coulter’s approach will pretty much alienate everyone who isn’t solidly social conservative or a Tea Partier.
In other words, she’s preaching to the same tired old party that keeps talking about outreach with one hand, but holding up Not Wanted sign with the other.
The Not Wanted sign is the one that Coulter keeps waving around wildly. She just doesn’t realize it.
As an aside, when I quoted Coulter’s quip she relies on quotes/research done by Steve Sailer, who happens to be from the VDare crowd - not exactly the most reliable of sources when it comes to, well, anything. See here, and here for a sampling.
Appearing on Fox News Republican talk show “Hannity” Monday night, right-wing columnist Ann Coulter said she’s sad that not only does she think the Boston bombing should shut down the nation’s immigration reform debate, she would like to see the alleged bomber’s widow in jail too, not for committing a crime but for “wearing a hijab.”
“I don’t care if she knew about this,” Coulter said. “She ought to be in prison for wearing a hijab. This immigration policy of us, you know, assimilating immigrants into our culture isn’t really working. They’re assimilating us into their culture. Did she get a clitorectomy too?”
Hannity seemed momentarily puzzled at the sudden citation of female genital mutilation, stammering his reply. “I, uh, I don’t know the answer to that,” he said before confidently adding: “But your point is well taken.”

Quick, someone get me to a hospital so they can sew my sides up!
Media Matters has a Who’s Who of the conservatives who will be appearing and/or speaking at the 2013 Conservative Political Action Committee conference. Below is a sampling of the participants and why they should live in infamy, and why conservatism is in deep deep trouble:
Ann Coulter, Conservative Author
Coulter: Bill Clinton “Was A Very Good Rapist.” During an interview with the New York Observer, Coulter responded to the question, “What should we remember about Bill Clinton?” by saying, “Well, he was a very good rapist. I think that should not be forgotten.” [Media Matters, 1/12/05]
Coulter Attacked 9/11 Widows. In her book Godless, Coulter wrote of the women left widowed by the 9/11 attacks: “These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much.” In a subsequent interview, she referred to the 9/11 widows as “cruel.” [Media Matters, 6/8/06, 7/14/06]
At 2007 CPAC, Coulter Referred To John Edwards As A “Faggot.” During CPAC in 2007, Coulter said she couldn’t “really talk about” former Democratic presidential nominee John Edwards because “you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot.’ ” [Media Matters, 6/28/07]
Ben Shapiro, Breitbart.com Editor-At-Large
Shapiro Started Baseless Rumor That Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel Received Money From Non-Existent “Friends Of Hamas.” Breitbart.com’s Ben Shapiro cited “Senate sources” to claim that then-nominee for Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel may have received money from a group called “Friends of Hamas.” It was later revealed that “Friends of Hamas” does not exist, but Shapiro refused to retract his claim. [Media Matters, 2/20/13]
Shapiro: “Arabs Like To Bomb Crap And Live In Open Sewage.” Shapiro tweeted about the Israeli and Palestinian conflict, writing: “Israelis like to build. Arabs like to bomb crap and live in open sewage. This is not a difficult issue. #settlementsrock.” [Twitter, 9/27/10, via Media Matters]
Dinesh D’Souza, Conservative Author
D’Souza Has Pushed Baseless Theory That Obama Espouses “Anti-Colonial,” “Third-World Anti-American” Worldview. In his book and his movie, D’Souza pushed the baseless theory that Obama adheres to a “failed Third-World collectivism” that is “anti-American.” In a Forbes article, D’Souza claimed that Obama endorses an “anticolonial ideology” that motivates him to “work to wring the neocolonialism out of America and the West.” [Media Matters, 9/13/10, 10/4/10, 8/27/12]
And that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
I am dumber for having read or listened to some of these comments. Think of what will happen to the attendees
Pulling Ann Coulter’s teeth.
When I first had this letter from Ann Coulter brought to my attention I wasn’t quite sure how to approach it. I knew I wanted to make a comment about it but felt sure most people who pay any attention to her already know she’s a bigot if not an outright racist and that she feeds people with similar mindsets some very tainted information.
What may be less well known, and what makes her so effective with both her ardent sycophantic followers and ignorant fence sitters is statistical misdirection. As with most of her media savvy friends - those ‘race realists’ firmly camped out within the right wing big tent - she denies the very existence of systemic racism but embraces the concept of reverse racism. If we fall for this obvious DARVO it makes it virtually impossible for us to say anything about her racism unless it can be shown her claims are obviously false.
Most people, while likely fairly literate, are less likely to be knowledgeable about how statistics are used and abused, so will accept official sounding numbers as being accurate and informative. It becomes a simple matter for someone intending to obfuscate the real information to mix and match samples with different focuses or by using unrelated samples that sound related.
“Even under Rubio’s scheme, all the children born to the 11 million newly legalized illegals will be instant citizens, able to collect welfare for their whole families and vote as soon as they are old enough.
Which won’t be long: The vast majority of illegal aliens are Hispanic, and Hispanics have a higher teen birthrate than any other ethnic group. In California, a majority of all Hispanic births are illegitimate. That’s a lot of Democratic voters coming.”
Even a quick look at the quote tells us she knows her intended audience quite well. She knows that with a little leading they will link illegal immigrants to unwed and teenage mothers, unwed mothers to disadvantaged unemployable or lazy children, lazy children to the use of welfare and welfare recipients to voting for the Democratic party. To validate the danger of legalizing illegal immigrants, Coulter throws a few statistical tidbits into the mix.
Her first statistic is the number of illegal immigrants currently living in the US, 11 million. That number is scary but accurate:
In summary, an estimated 11.5 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the United States in January 2011 compared to a revised 2010 estimate of 11.6 million.
She then goes on to tell us that most of those illegals are Hispanic, a vague comment designed to narrow the sample to a specific subset while still keeping it scary. Even if we grant that all the immigrants from specific countries are likely to be Hispanic the actual number is reduced significantly to 8.57 million.
Here comes the reason she wanted to specify Hispanics, their relatively high teenage birth rate of 49.4 per 1000. As Coulter states, it is indeed the highest of all. Of course the birth rate does not give us an idea of actual births without knowing the populations. To get an idea of the population we need to make a few calculations related to Coulter’s comments.
The number of female illegal immigrants less than 19 is around 12% of the total number. You’ll note I didn’t include 19 year old but I did include girls under 15. This is a limitation of the information source I’m using. The number of teenage female illegal immigrants of childbearing age should be around 1,028,400. That needs to be further reduced to just Hispanic females. 8,570,000/11,600,000*100=73.9% so there would be about 760,000 teenage female Hispanic illegal immigrants. At 49.4 per 1000 per year, the number of pregnant teenage Hispanic illegal immigrants would be around 37,544
All of the numbers Coulter uses up til this point are national numbers. She switches to a smaller more specific sample, that of California teenage single mothers, which may or may not reflect that of the larger national sample, in order to set up the welfare connection.
The number of illegal immigrants matching the criteria set by Coulter is tiny in comparison to the scary big number she originally mentioned, yet the way it is presented increases rather than decreases the apocalyptic image Coulter is trying to leave.
The number 37,544 is even less scary when compared to the number of Americans of voting age - 234,564,000. The number of new Hispanic welfare bums voting for the Democrats, even if we assume all children born to unwed teenage mothers end up on welfare and vote Democratic, is less than .016% of the voting public.
The best way to pull Coulter’s teeth is to work the numbers.
I first start to turn away from Ann Coulter in 2003, when I compared passages from her book Treason and Mona Charen’s Useful Idiots. Both books looked at what their authors considered liberal foreign policy mistakes during the Cold War, but whereas Charen came across as thoughtful and moderate in tone, and more that once went out of her way to note liberals who did not make what she considered the mistakes made by others on the left, Coulter came across as crass, sarcastic, and uninterested in variations in opinion; To her all liberals were to be harshly mocked. When I realized how much more readable and usable as a source Charen’s book was owing to its willlingness to look below the surface of complex matters, I started become skeptical of Ann Coulter.
In the years since I have come to see her as a crass hatespewer, who says ugly things to make money. But this latest Tweet from Ann Coulter set a new low of ugliness. It’s posted below, followed by my reply:
However annoyed I have ever been with Barack Obama, neither he nor any of his family would ever say such an ugly thing as what Ann Coulter said. Her words proven her to once again be a hate monger, raging against a man who is a better person than she will ever be.
I mean, this is someone who called John Edwards a “faggot,” or said Jews need to be “perfected,” or “our blacks are better than their blacks,” for CRYING OUT LOUD.
Now she’s become a jobs truther.
For GOD’S SAKE…Just SHUT UP ALREADY!!!
“I think it’s probably a good sign that Obama is so desperate just to get the base Democratic voter — stupid single women — to vote for him,” Coulter told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday. “This is good news that he needs to lock up that part of the Democratic vote.”
“He’s trying to get the stupid single women voter, which is the Democratic Party base,” Coulter repeated. “And I would just say to stupid single women voters, your husband will not be able to pay you child support if Obamacare goes through and Obama is re-elected. You are talking about the total destruction of wealth. It is the end of America as we know it.”
“Great, you will get free contraception; you won’t have to pay a $10 co-pay, but it will be the end of America. Think about that!”
