US troops in Afghanistan will end “most” combat operations this spring, US President Barack Obama and Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai have agreed.
American forces are expected to switch to a support role, slightly earlier than originally scheduled, as Afghan troops take the security lead.
The two leaders also backed the holding of talks between the Afghan government and Taliban leaders in Doha, Qatar.
Most of the 66,000 US troops in Afghanistan are due to leave in 2014.
“Starting this spring, our troops will have a different mission - training, advising, assisting Afghan forces,” Mr Obama said in remarks at the White House on Friday, as Mr Karzai stood alongside.

U.S. President Barack Obama is holding White House talks Friday with the top four congressional leaders as the deadline for avoiding the “fiscal cliff” fast approaches.
Obama will meet with Democratic and Republican Senate leaders Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner and Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
If there is no deal by January 1, nearly every American will see his or her taxes go up, along with automatic government spending cuts. Economists fear this could plunge the fragile economy back into recession.
Congressional Republican leaders have also called the House back into session this Sunday evening. The House adjourned last week after failing to agree on a fiscal cliff deal with the White House.
A northern Indiana man who allegedly threatened to “kill as many people as he could” at an elementary school near his home was arrested by officers who later found 47 guns and ammunition hidden throughout his home.
Von. I. Meyer, 60, of Cedar Lake, was arrested Saturday after prosecutors filed formal charges of felony intimidation, domestic battery and resisting law enforcement against him. He was being held Sunday without bond at the Lake County Jail, pending an initial hearing on the charges, police said in a statement.
Cedar Lake Police officers were called to Meyer’s home early Friday after he allegedly threatened to set his wife on fire once she fell asleep, the statement said.
Meyer also threatened to enter nearby Jane Ball Elementary School “and kill as many people as he could before police could stop him,” the statement said. Meyer’s home is less than 1,000 feet from the school and linked to it by trails and paths through a wooded area, police said.
Police said in the statement that they notified school officials and boosted security at all area schools Friday — the same day 26 people, including 20 students, were shot and killed at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
On Friday, police in Bartlesville, Oklahoma arrested an 18-year-old high school student who was planning a school-shooting massacre plot. Sammie Eaglebear Chavez “tried to recruit other students to assist him with carrying out a plan to lure students into the school auditorium where he planned to begin shooting them after chaining the doors shut.”
“He also told them that if the students assisting him did not do what they were supposed to do, he would not hesitate to kill them and/or himself.” Chavez was arrested on Friday; bail is set at $1 million.
In my youth I used to dance a lot, perhaps if I were still doing that I wouldn’t be having to do all these heart scans and stress tests lately… just a hint for the youngsters here, don’t stop this stuff even when it gets hard or when you don’t seem to fit anymore…
