Shocking! Colorado GOP Lawmaker: A ‘Good Thing’ Theater Gunman James Holmes had 100-Round Magazine (Video)
Colorado Republican state Senator Bernie Herpin made quite the gaffe during a hearing for legislation that would overturn the new ban on magazines of 15-rounds or more. Herpin and other Colorado Republicans are trying to overturn the ban imposed last year despite being outnumbered by Democrats in both the Colorado House and Senate.
Herpin tried to support his point by invoking the gun used by James Holmes, who killed 12 people and injured 70 when he opened fire in an Aurora movie theater back in July 2012. Here’s how the dialogue went:
Democratic state Senator Irene Aguilar: “My understanding is that James Holmes bought his 100-round capacity magazine legally. So in fact, this law would have stopped James Holmes from purchasing a 100-round magazine. I was wondering if you agree with me.”
Herpin: “Perhaps, James Holmes would not have been able to purchase a 100-round magazine. As it turned out, that was maybe a good thing that he had a 100-round magazine, because it jammed. If he had four, five, six 15-round magazines, there’s no telling how much damage he could have done until a good guy with a gun showed up.”
The fact that there are a lot of people out there trying to make this guy a hero, says a lot.
In an attempt to outdo Sean Hannity’s efforts to turn George Zimmerman into a hero, WorldNetDaily’s Jack Cashill is now writing a book that paints the killer as a conservative idol.
Ryan Lenz at Hate Watch has another update for us on the story of Craig Cobb. Looks like instead of starting his all white town like he had dreamed, the bigoted idiot is going to jail. Glad he wasn’t able to hurt anyone. I hope this gets him to give up trying to bring about his dream of an all white homeland on US soil.
This may be the end of Craig Cobb in Leith, N.D.
The infamous anti-Semite was arrested last weekend and charged with four felony terrorizing counts after he confronted several town residents while brandishing a firearm, the Grant County Sheriff’s Department said.
Cobb, 62, was arrested on Saturday along with Kynan Dutton, 29, after the sheriff’s department received several calls from concerned citizens. Eyewitnesses reported that Cobb and Dutton were toting guns during interactions with Leith City Councilman Lee Cook, Leith residents Miller and Paul Ferrie, and Leith supporter Gregory Bruce.
Both Cobb and Dutton are being held in the Mercer County Jail in Stanton, N.D., where they were awaiting a hearing this afternoon to determine bail. If convicted of all charges, Cobb and Dutton face a minimum of eight years in jail.
Gun rights advocates are jumping at recent polls showing that gun violence has decreased, and the public is unaware of this phenomenon. Rush Limbaugh argues that, “as America arms up, gun violence goes down,” parroting the infamous book by Dr. John Lott, More Guns, Less Crime. Emily Miller argues in the Washington Times that, liberals have been “muzzled” by the news. But, in fact, research shows that those who oppose gun control ask the wrong questions.
Let’s begin with the question of declining violence and the public’s unawareness of this decline (which has been chalked up to the “liberal media”). It should be chalked up to “media.” As Steven Pinker notes in The Better Angels of Our Nature violence has been declining everywhere, and yet few people are aware because, as much as a despise cliché “if it bleeds, it leads.” People drastically overrate the possibility of their children being kidnapped, for example, because of prominent media coverage. They underrate their child’s chance of drowning in a pool. Sadly, since gun violence is still sexy, it will dwarf coverage of other deaths. All violence has declined, but gun violence still amounts to a good portion of it. And being an economist, it represents a sort of violence which is easy to decrease on the margin: something we can easily reduce without significant harm to society because nothing has addressed it as of yet.
But let’s dig deeper, into the assumption of the gun rights advocates. Do more guns mean less crime? Is the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun? As Jon Stewart brilliantly points out, identifying a bad guy is nearly impossible without gun control. Furthermore, much gun violence is committed by “normal guys” in a violent passion.
Oak Park, MI - An Orthodox Oak Park man was honored by police last week Thursday for his efforts in catching a purse snatcher outside a local kosher supermarket and was presented with a citation by the Southfield Police Department for his heroic efforts.
51 year old Aaron Tobin was standing outside One Stop Kosher Food Market in the Detroit suburb of Southfield on March 19th when he saw a man grab the purse of a mother with two small children who was about to start loading groceries into her car. Surveillance video shows the purse snatcher surveying the parking lot just moments before the theft and captured the ensuing events on video.
Tobin, who had just spent part of his morning taking a tactical defense class, said that at first he couldn’t believe what he had just seen.
“The lady was screaming ‘Help me, help me!’” Tobin told VIN News. “I didn’t know if she had been stabbed or punched or anything.”
After ascertaining that the woman was unharmed, Tobin jumped into his own vehicle, hoping to catch the thief who had fled across the street. Waiting to make the turn out of the store’s parking lot, Tobin saw the man reversing direction and running towards him. Leaping out of his car, Tobin began to chase the thief, who turned briefly when Tobin yelled out to him to stop.
“That one pause gave me the opportunity to tackle him,” said Tobin.
Tobin restrained the 22 year old man, with the help of bystanders, until police arrived.
The news report continues that Tobin had received tactical training and was carrying a gun at the time, but did not need to draw or use it.
I am posting this story here because:
1. HOLY FREAKING SHIT I SHOP AT THIS STORE ALL THE TIME
2. MOAR GUNZ is not the answer, be alert, be aware.
3. Yashar koach to Mr. Tobin for being in the right place at the right time and knowing what to do, also kudos to him for not shooting anyone.
4. Wingnuts will probably be using this story as proof of a need for MOAR GUNZ even though NO GUNZ were needed in the capture of the fleeing felon.
Land-use zoning may be able to reduce crime in urban areas, study finds
Using zoning laws to shape the type of development and activity that occur in a neighborhood may be one way to reduce crime in urban areas, according to a new RAND Corporation study.
Studying high-crime areas in the city of Los Angeles, researchers found that city blocks that included both residential and commercial zoning purposes experienced less crime than nearby blocks zoned primarily for commercial purposes. Crime was lowest in blocks zoned for residential-only uses, even in relatively high crime neighborhoods.
The study found that single-use commercially zoned blocks in Los Angeles have crime rates that are 45 percent higher than similar blocks that include residential uses.
“At least in the case of a city like Los Angeles, zoning matters — an important fraction of reported crime is associated with the kind of zoning on a city block,” said James M. Anderson, the study’s lead author and a behavioral scientist at RAND, a nonprofit research organization. “These results suggest both researchers and policymakers should pay more attention to the ways in which zoning and other land-use policies can affect crime.”
Policymakers have long debated the effect that city planning and zoning can have on crime. Some experts have urged diverse uses of land in order to create an urban environment that encourages “eyes on the street” to deter crime.
A shooting at a wood-processing company in central Switzerland has left three people dead and seven wounded, some of them seriously, prosecutors say.
The shooting occurred shortly after 9am on Wednesday at the premises of Kronospan, a company in the small town of Menznau, west of Lucerne.
Three people were killed, among them the suspected assailant, police in Lucerne said in a statement. A further seven were wounded, several of them seriously. Officials gave no further details.
The local Neue Luzerner Zeitung newspaper cited a witness as saying that the shooter opened fire in the company canteen. It was not immediately clear who the shooter was, what the motive might have been or whether the assailant worked for the company.
A boy was being held hostage in a bunker in Alabama early Wednesday by a man who seized him from a school bus after fatally shooting the driver, witnesses and police said.
Authorities were negotiating with the man overnight at the scene near Midland City.
The driver of the bus died from gunshot wounds on Tuesday afternoon and the suspect was not in custody, according to the Dale County Sheriff’s Department.
Witnesses told NBC station WSFA that the suspect boarded the bus and ordered some children off before grabbing a boy aged 5 or 6, shooting the driver and fleeing towards his nearby home.
Michael Senn, who is minister of a nearby church, told the station that he spoke to several children on the bus, including a girl who said the driver was shot four times. He described one 13-year-old as “really traumatized.”
Mike Creel, who said he was the suspect’s neighbor, told the station the suspect had hidden ‘in his homemade bomb shelter.’ However, officials described it as a storm shelter.
Creel said the suspect has lived on the property for around two years and that the underground shelter was ‘one of the first things he started building.”
The station said police believed the child was “OK” and that police were conducting negotiations with the suspect using a plastic pipe.
Other neighbors identified the suspect to the local newspaper, the Dothan Eagle, as a 67-year-old man. NBC News was unable to confirm this early Wednesday.
Lisa Harden, of the Dale County School District Office, said the bus was on a route that served all local schools, and had children of all ages on board.
WEBSTER (AP) — Police have found human remains in the burned-out home of the Webster, N.Y., ex-con who killed two firefighters and believe the victim is the gunman’s sister.
Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Tuesday the remains were found in the charred house that 62-year-old William Spengler shared with his 67-year-old sister, Cheryl. A medical examiner will need to determine the identity.
Police say Willliam Spengler armed himself with a revolver, shotgun and military-style rifle before he set his house afire to lure first responders into a pre-dawn death trap on Christmas Eve.
Pickering says Spengler “was equipped to go to war.”
Spengler killed himself as seven houses burned around him. A friend said Spengler hated his sister but police say a motive hasn’t been determined.
WAYNE LAPIERRE, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, NRA:
The National Rifle Association — 4 million mothers, fathers, sons and daughters — join the nation in horror, outrage, grief, and earnest prayer for the families of Newtown, Connecticut, who have suffered such an incomprehensible loss as a result of this unspeakable crime.
Out of respect for the families and until the facts are known, the NRA has refrained from comment.
While some have tried to exploit tragedy for political gain, we have remained respectably silent. Now, we must speak for the safety of our nation’s children.
An Organization with only four million members, a tiny 1.3% of the total U.S. population, controls the discussion of gun policy and the creation of gun regulations and laws in this country. We have allowed perhaps the most fervently pro-gun fringe group within our nation the power to give direction to our elected representatives. Why is that?
Because for all the noise and anger directed at us over the past week, no one, nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now, starting today, in a way that we know works?
The only way to answer that question is to face the truth. Politicians pass laws for gun free school zones, they issue press releases bragging about them. They post signs advertising them. And, in doing so, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are the safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk.
The gun free zones that he is complaining about do not in any way effect members of law enforcement or licensed security staff, only private citizens. Many schools around the country are already staffed with a police officer during operational hours. Not just in the big cities where many schools already have controlled entry points and metal detectors but in more rural areas too.
It was not a mandated “Gun Free Zone” that prevented Newtown from having an armed security officer, rather it was considerations of cost and the mistaken belief that “It probably wont ever happen here.” Wayne ignores all of this to phrase his argument so that it implies that no armed security is allowed on school property, something that is far from true.
How have our nation’s priorities gotten so far out of order. Think about it. We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, court houses, even sports stadiums are all protected by armed security.
We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it comes to our most beloved, innocent, and vulnerable members of the American family, our children, we as a society leave them every day utterly defenseless, and the monsters and the predators of the world know it, and exploit it.
Again Wayne completely ignores the fact that many schools already have “School Resource Officers” (SROs) and argues that armed murderers only attack schools because they know that no armed resistance will be found there. This flies in the face of reality where the perpetrators of these crimes have attacked both schools and colleges that did in fact have an armed police presence.
The truth is, that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters. People that are so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons, that no sane person can every possibly comprehend them. They walk among us every single day, and does anybody really believe that the next Adam Lanza isn’t planning his attack on a school, he’s already identified at this very moment?
Here comes the fear! That’s right folks, monsters and demons are everywhere, they are so prevalent in our society that you meet them every single day! You should quit reading this right now and go out and buy a gun because that is the only thing that will help to make you feel secure again!
Luckily for you in most states you will be able to buy a gun today, with no waiting period, thanks to the efforts of the NRA to defeat the 5 day waiting period that was originally included in the Brady Act. Only a handful of states have enacted their own state waiting/cool down periods for the purchase of firearms and only six include rifles of any type in those regulations.
How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame from a national media machine that rewards them with wall-to-wall attention and a sense of identity that they crave, while provoking others to try to make their mark.
What solution does he propose to this, and is it really an overriding factual consideration? I have yet to see any real evidence that shows that posthumous fame is the primary goal for these shooters. Still, let us assume that he is correct and that media attention is a strong motivating factor, how does he intend to limit this attention?
A dozen more killers, a hundred more? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation’s refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill? The fact is this: That wouldn’t even begin to address the much larger, more lethal criminal class — killers, robbers, rapists, gang members who have spread like cancer in every community across our nation.
The NRA has actively fought against the creation of such a database claiming that it would deny millions of legitimate gun owners their rights based on earlier juvenile mental health records. It has campaigned to restrict the types of information that could be included in such a database. It has also either directly or indirectly supported the appeals of more than 30,000 people who have successfully contested being denied a gun purchase due to background checks.
Judges have repeatedly shown themselves to be loath to hold juvenile records of instability against adults in regards to gun ownership. Even though the truth is that adults almost never encounter the mental health system involuntarily unless through the criminal court system.
But never mind all that, now they want to know why it has not been done yet, obviously it is the fault of the clueless federal government!
Meanwhile, while that happens, federal gun prosecutions have decreased by 40 percent, to the lowest levels in a decade. So now, due to a declined willingness to prosecute dangerous criminals, violent crime is increasing again for the first time in 19 years. Add another hurricane, terrorist attack, or some other natural of manmade disaster, and you’ve got a recipe for a national nightmare of violence and victimization.
Sneaky use of statistics alert: Federal gun prosecutions have decreased by 40% compared to when exactly?
Overall gun crime is down, probably due in no small part to the mandatory long prison sentences now imposed for gun related crimes by most states. Federal prosecutions for gun related offenses only occur in less than 1% all gun related crimes and primarily deal with non-licensed and illegal gun sales or possession of illegal weapon types. How is this at all relevant to the level of violent gun crime within this country?
Oh, and fear II then makes an appearance, just one more hurricane, just one more terrorist attack, or one more “manmade” (Government false flag attack!!!) disaster is going to result in the total breakdown of society. Boy will you be wishing you had bought a gun then, how else are you going to shoot your neighbors when they come to take your stuff?
And here’s another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal. There exists in this country, sadly, a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells and stows violence against its own people. Through vicious, violent video games with names like ‘Bullet Storm,’ ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ ‘Mortal Combat,’ and ‘Splatterhouse.’
And here’s one, it’s called ‘Kindergarten Killers.’ It’s been online for 10 years. How come my research staff can find it, and all of yours couldn’t? Or didn’t want anyone to know you had found it? Add another hurricane, add another natural disaster. I mean we have blood-soaked films out there, like ‘American Psycho,’ ‘Natural Born Killers.’ They’re aired like propaganda loops on Splatterdays and every single day.
Fear III rears its ugly head, it is the prevalence of violent video games titles and movies that is responsible for the decreasing violence in America!
Wait a second, violent crimes are decreasing even as movies and games have become increasingly more violent? How can that be? Perhaps the vast majority of people in this country are too grounded in reality to use fictional movies and games to motivate them to actually kill people in real life instead of as escapist entertainment as intended?
1,000 music videos, and you all know this, portray life as a joke and they play murder — portray murder as a way of life. And then they all have the nerve to call it entertainment. But is that what it really is? Isn’t fantasizing about killing people as a way to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography? In a race to the bottom, many conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate, and offend every standard of civilized society, by bringing an even more toxic mix of reckless behavior, and criminal cruelty right into our homes. Every minute, every day, every hour of every single year.
Once again Wayne, this is escapist fantasy and is recognized as such by 99.9999% of those who are exposed to it. Show me some clinical studies that prove that this type of entertainment actually has an effect on peoples decisions in real life and I’ll start taking you seriously.
A child growing up in America today witnesses 16,000 murders, and 200,000 acts of violence by the time he or she reaches the ripe old age of 18. And, throughout it all, too many in the national media, their corporate owners, and their stockholders act as silent enablers, if not complicit co-conspirators.
Rather than face their own moral failings, the media demonize gun owners.
Gee Wayne, did you ever stop to consider that if guns didn’t permeate our society and that if real gun assaults did not constantly happen around us in this country, that maybe they would not be so prevalent in the fictional accounts either?
