The subcontinent of South Asia has inexorably been developing into a cauldron of violence ever since the origins of Islam in Arabia and its steady expansion to the east. Here it clashed with Hinduism a religion that was an antithesis of Islam and over the centuries this unhappy mix has been smoldering and has now reached a point where there is likely to be a furious conflagration. During the course of the history of this subcontinent there have been many watersheds, ever since the advent of Islam into this region. The first serious clashes took place in the hot plains of North India when the Muslim armies clashed with the Hindu Rajput rulers. After some fierce battles, the Hindu peoples settled under the kings of the Muslim Sultanates of the earlier dynasties of the Slave kings, until the Mughals stabilized a Caliphate in North India. The Mughals after Aurangzeb declined and the dynasty petered out.
When the British East India Company was ruling the country, there was a second watershed between Hindu and Muslim cultures. This was the Sepoy Mutiny, when the rigid Wahabi philosophy was brought to India by Muslims who went for the annual Haj pilgrimage. While Hindu and Muslim sepoys were involved in the Mutiny against the British, the Sikhs and the Gurkhas did not side with the mutineers. The revolt was crushed and the British Government then took over the reins of the Government. The medium of administration was Urdu during the reign of the Mughals. After the British Government took over the reins of government after the Sepoy Mutiny, they changed the medium of administration to English. This had a major impact on the domination of the Muslims in administration. It was the Hindus who took to English education and who also took advantage of the hundreds of Catholic Convents and Protestant Mission schools that were set up by the Proselytising Christian missionaries both Protestant and Catholic. In a couple of years, the Muslim community had declined in Government.
The third flashpoint in this story took place when the British had to divide India between a secular India and a Muslim Pakistan.
Pamela Geller, American Islamophobia’s shrillest voice, is planning yet another demonstration of anti-Muslim hate - this time, in Europe.
According to her blog, Atlas Shrugs, “the world’s leading freedom action organizations” (read: anti-Muslim hate groups) will rally in Stockholm, Sweden, tomorrow to launch a “worldwide counter jihad alliance.”
The conference’s sponsors are a coalition of anti-Muslim organizations including Geller’s Stop Islamization of America (SIOA); Stop Islamization of Nations (SION), which is also led by Geller; a Denmark-based group called Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE) that was the inspiration for Geller’s efforts; and the English Defence League (EDL), a thuggish anti-Muslim street movement that Geller, who is Jewish, has embraced despite its alleged ties to open anti-Semites.
Speakers, according to Geller’s blog, will include some of Islamophobia’s most influential and vicious voices. In addition to herself, Geller lists Robert Spencer, a colleague and self-taught “expert” on Islam who is greatly admired by Anders Breivik, the Oslo terrorist who in July 2011 slaughtered 77 people he thought were enabling Muslim immigration into Norway; Steven Lennon and Kev Carrol of the EDL; Anders Gravers of SIOE; and a host of European and Australian Islamophobes whose names are less well-known in America. Noteworthy among them is Richard Abrahamsson (also known as Richard Abrams), a leader in the Swedish Defence League (SDL) who, according to Islamophobia Watch, has blogged about a plan to “reclaim the Swastika,” writing, “If you want US to respect OTHER cultures, you must also respect OUR culture and its symbols.”
The Stockholm gathering comes in advance of a Sept. 11 event in New York City that, according to Geller, will be the “first session of the International Freedom Defense Congress” (which, according to Geller, is SION’s “action arm”). The meeting falls on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 Al Qaeda attacks.
Demonstrating once again her exceptional talent for redefining words to suit her purposes, Geller on her blog describes the International Freedom Defense Congress - whose sole purpose is to crush a religion practiced in some form by nearly one in four human beings on the planet - is devoted to “forming a common defense of freedom and human rights.” Speakers at its Sept. 11 confab will include SION board member Cliff Kincaid, the anti-communist, anti-gay and anti-Muslim head of the amusingly misnamed Accuracy in Media; Wafa Sultan, who has suggested that “the West” may eventually need to use atomic bombs to “pressure” Islam to “change”; Babu Suseelan, a Hindu nationalist who believes that Marxists and jihadists are “in collusion” to “deconstruct [Hindu] society with apocalyptic ideas” and who has called on India’s Hindu population to “unite together and work towards the goal of Establishment of ‘Divine Hindu Kingdom’”; SIOE’s Anders Gravers; and a host of other anti-Muslim activists from across the globe.
In hate group leader Pamela Geller’s view pretty much every case of domestic violence against women in a Muslim household is an honor killing or shariah in practice, while she ignores the domestic violence in other religious groups and tribes. There are Hindu, Sikh, Christian, and Tamil tribes in Africa and the sub continent of Asia who will kill family members over honor, and Pamela tries to pretend that there aren’t any fundamentalist Christian fathers who have ever killed a daughter because she ‘shamed’ the family.
She does this because it allows her to pose as a rights activist while waging a rabid campaign of hate against Muslims.
Violence against women is a serious problem, and in areas where tribal purity and religious exclusivity is practiced honor killing must be protested. Violence against women is also a serious problem here in the us, but the evil of it is not owned by just one religion.
Anti-Islam activists from across the U.S. are in Dearborn today for a conference they say is needed to rescue Muslim women. Called the Jessica Mokdad Human Rights Conference on Honor Killings, it’s named after a 20-year-old Muslim woman killed in Warren last year.
But Muslim women in metro Detroit are rejecting the conference’s message, saying it promotes hatred of Islam and Arab Americans. And Mokdad’s family also strongly objects to the conference, saying they don’t want her name being used to promote hate.
On Friday, Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Bill Cataldo, who is chief of homicide, told the Free Press that Mokdad’s death was not related to Islam or culture.
“It’s not a case based on honor,” Cataldo said. “The family objects to them using her name.”
In response to the anti-Islam conference today, Arab-American groups plan to hold a separate conference nearby in Detroit that speaks out against bigotry.
Organized by several Arab-American organizations, it’s called Rejecting Islamophobia: A Community Stand Against Hate.
Mokdad was shot dead last April in Warren by her stepfather, Rahim Alfetlawi, who faces first-degree murder charges.
@sarahposner will be at the counter conference along with many others
Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Freshmen (NLSF), Julie Park, an educationalist at the University of Maryland, has investigated how inter-racial friendships and religious affiliation interact. The NLSF was an annual survey of White, Black, Latino, and Asian American students from 28 selective institutions that ran from 1999 to 2004.
During their fourth year of college, students were asked to “think of the four people at [your college] with whom you have been closest during your college years.” They were also asked to list the race/ethnicity of each of the friends.
What she found was that the most religious students (based on self-reported religiosity, their frequency of religious service attendance, and their religious observance) also had the fewest friends from other races.
What’s more, Protestant or Jewish (but not Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist) students also had the fewest mixed-race friendships. That’s probably because these are the two major religious groups.
These two effects were independent - so the most mono-cultural people were the most religious Protestants and Jews. This held even after controlling for a bunch of other factors, including the racial diversity of the college, the diversity of their previous school, and the race of the student.
The EDL are little more then Right-wing Football Hooligans using Islam as an excuse to riot.
TAXPAYERS face an eyewatering bill of more than half-a-million pounds after
the latest English Defence League protest in Dudley, which included extremists from the EDL’s Rowley Regis branch.
The far right group returned to the town for the third time this year last Saturday, costing Dudley Council £150,000 in paying for additional staff plus facilities including toilets and fencing as well as preparation work in the protest zone.
West Midlands Police are also counting the cost of the rally as 900 officers from around the UK were involved in Operation Belvedere to contain an estimated 500 EDL members on Stafford Street car park and prevent confrontation with anti-fascist activists at a counter demonstration in Tower Street.
The force believes the operation will set the public back by £400,000.
Councillor Anne Millward, leader of Dudley Council, said: “Dudley Council does not have the powers to ban this protest but we have made it clear from the outset that we are opposed to the EDL and have worked closely with the police to do all we could to protect, reassure and support local people.”
Town traders were left paying a hefty price in lost business after many premises, including the market, closed amid fears the demonstration would become violent.
Cllr Millward added: “Honest, hard working people who run local shops and businesses have again been hit as hard as anyone by the EDL’s pointless protest.
“While we were encouraged to see some open for business, many were again forced to close.”
Trouble flared during the protest when a group of EDL supporters attempted to break through police lines and, later in the day, officers in riot gear clashed with protesters throwing cans, bottles and bricks.
There were also incidents away from the official protest site during the day.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Around 20 offences have been recorded to date, of criminal damage caused to cars and premises.
“Amongst the premises attacked were residential homes around Alexandra Street, cars parked in roads surrounding Stafford Street, restaurants on Wolverhampton Street and the Hindu Temple.
“Many of these locations saw windows smashed, and damage caused to fencing. A couple of vehicles were damaged as they were targeted whilst being driven through the town.”
A total of 21 people were arrested during the protest for alleged offences including 17 for violent disorder, two for affray, one for a public order offence and one for possessing an offensive weapon.
Why would an organization, who are allegedly fighting (an entirely fictional) Islamization of Great Britain? Here’s a Picture of EDL at a rally, would most likely chanting slurs at Asians from Pakistan or India.
So much for being the Anti-Jihadists that Jihadwatch and like make them out to be.
