Here we go folks. Teahupoo is not predicted to get XXL this year during the waiting period, but it will still be a great event. Live coverage is just beginning now.
Today is the final day of competition in the 2012 Billabong Pipe Masters on the North Shore of Oahu. First heat in the water features Kelly Slater, who is attempting to win an unprecedented 12th ASP World Title. The only 2 surfers that have a shot at the title anymore are Kelly and Joel Parkinson. There is a good chance that both of them will advance to the finals and face each other in an exciting, epic showdown. Down to the wire! The contest will be starting at 9:00am Hawaii time (11:00am Pacific). Not to be missed!
Solid swell continues on the North Shore of Oahu and day 2 of the Pipe Masters contest is underway!
Building swell and the first heat is in the water now.
UPDATE: 8am Tahiti time: Teahupoo is absolutely epic today. Super clean conditions and double overhead waves on offer for the world’s best surfers. This looks to be a memorable final day for the contest, with some of the sets looking almost as heavy as last year.
Next call is at 6:30am Tahiti time (9:30am Pacific). Today should be an exciting day of competition and will finish with a new event champion, as last year’s winner, Kelly Slater, was eliminated in Round 3. Hopefully, the waves will be more consistent and give everyone a chance to show off their barrel-riding skills. Last chance to see live action from one of the most beautiful places on Earth!
During Round 3 Heat 5, spectators in the channel got a close-up look as several whales swam by and breached just outside of the lineup.
If that wasn’t enough, there were beautiful rainbows popping up all day as well.
It looks like the swell is building and the contest should be getting underway around 7:30am Tahiti time (10:30am Pacific). This should be a really exciting 2 days of competition at one of the heaviest waves on the planet. Not to be missed!
UPDATE 8:10am Tahiti time: Contest is on a brief hold but will be starting soon. Building surf all day.
Update 8:15am Tahiti time: Contest will begin at 8:30!
If you have a chance, tune in to the live webcast from Hawaii to see one of the most amazing waves on the planet being ridden by some of the best surfers in the world. If conditions are anything like yesterday, this final day of the event could be truly exciting. The winner will be crowned later today.
UPDATE: The contest is set to begin at 8AM HST. Not to be missed!
UPDATE 5:00pm PST - John John Florence wins the Volcom Pipe Pro in the final seconds of what was one of the most exciting finals I’ve ever witnessed. He got one of the best waves of the day in the final seconds of the final to come from behind and win. Unbelievably epic.
