UN envoy Martin Kobler has also called for restraint, describing Iraq as “at a crossroads”.

The American Civil Liberties Union is asking the U.S. Department of Education to investigate what it calls “unlawful” single-sex education programs in Birmingham’s Huffman Middle School and another district in Idaho.

The ACLU filed complaints with the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, saying the programs appear to violate federal law by forcing students into a single-sex environment with little or no alternative options, rely on harmful gender stereotypes and deprive students of equal educational opportunities merely because of their sex.

“We understand that teachers and parents want to provide the best education for their children. But coeducation was never the problem with failing schools, and single-sex programs are not the answer,” said Christina Brandt-Young, attorney with the ACLU Women’s Rights Project. “These programs are poorly designed and based on pseudoscience and stereotypes that do nothing to enhance learning, and only reinforce discredited ideas about how boys and girls behave.”

The single-sex program at Huffman Middle School has been in place since 2010 and students who wish to be in coeducational classes must transfer to another school. Huffman students are separated by sex for all classes, even during lunch.

According to the complaint filed by the ACLU, instructions for teaching boys call for stressing heroic behavior that shows what it means to “be a man.” According to the ACLU, the school relied on a book that teaches that boys are better than girls in math because their bodies receive daily surges of testosterone, while girls have similar skills only a few days per month when they experience increased estrogen during the menstrual cycle.

This is harmful, no doubt, but also kind of weird.

NEW YORK (AP) — The abuse went on for nearly three years before the schoolgirl told anyone that her spiritual adviser was molesting her while he was supposed to be mentoring her about her religion, authorities said.

But in Brooklyn’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community, 53-year-old Nechemya Weberman has been embraced and defended as wrongly accused. The girl has been called a slut and a troublemaker, her family threatened and spat at on the street.

The rallying around Weberman, who goes on trial this month, and ostracizing of his accuser and her family reflects long-held beliefs in this insular community that problems should be dealt with from within and that elders have far more authority than the young. It also brought to light allegations that the district attorney was too cozy with powerful rabbis, a charge he vehemently denies.

“There are other people that claim misconduct and they can’t come out because they’re going to be re-victimized and ostracized by the community,” said Judy Genut, a friend of the accuser’s family who counsels troubled girls.

Brooklyn is home to about 250,000 ultra-orthodox Jews, the largest community outside of Israel. Step onto a Williamsburg street and tall guys in skinny jeans and tattoos are mingling with a flush of men in dark coats and hats carrying prayer books and speaking Yiddish. The Hasidic Jews appear to outsiders as though they come from another time; embracing centuries-old traditions, they wear black clothes, tall hats, long beards and earlocks. Women wear long skirts and cover their heads after they marry.

They have their own ambulances and schools, called yeshivas, their own civilian police and rabbinical courts. Members are encouraged to first speak to a rabbi before going to secular authorities — and as a result, cases rarely make it to outside law enforcement.

The topic has been studied and reported in the Jewish media for years and has recently made headlines in New York papers.

“They think that anyone who turns over anyone to the outside authorities is committing a transgression to the community at large,” said Samuel Heilman, a professor of Jewish studies at Queens College.

The girl, now 17, was sent to Weberman at age 12 because she’d been asking theological questions and he had a reputation for helping people back on the spiritual path. He often counseled people, though he had no formal training. But during sessions, authorities say, he forced the girl to perform sex acts.

The girl started dressing immodestly, was deemed a troublemaker and removed from her school — one Weberman was affiliated with — and sent to another, family friends said. The allegations surfaced in 2011 when she told a guidance counselor there she’d been molested.

The Associated Press typically doesn’t identify people who say they are the victims of sexual assault.

Weberman has pleaded not guilty, and articles in Hasidic newspapers have proclaimed his innocence and begged the community for support. More than 1,000 men showed up for a fundraiser aiming to raise $500,000 for his legal fees and, if he’s convicted and jailed, money for his family.

“It’s very hard for the town to believe the things that he’s being accused of because he has a reputation of doing good and being good,” Genut said.

George Farkas, Weberman’s lawyer, said his client isn’t guilty but is damned regardless because the allegations will taint his reputation.

The family has said they would’ve preferred to handle the allegations within the community. But when accusations are managed from the inside, victims are rarely believed and abusers aren’t punished — in part because the word of an elder is respected over the word of a child, victims and advocates say.

This should not stand, especially in a liberal democracy, where Secular Law is absolute. Those that knew about the sexual molestation but nothing should be charged and those that actively covered it up should be charged with same crimes as the pedophile.

It is not exactly news that the Obama presidency is determined to go to unprecedented lengths to mollify, appease and otherwise pander to what it calls the ‘Muslim world.’ But the question has begun to occur: At what point do these efforts cross the line from a misbegotten policy to one that is downright anti-American - hostile to our values, incompatible with our vital interests and at odds with our Constitution?

The evidence is rapidly accumulating that we have reached that point. Our representatives in Congress must have the courage to rediscover a lost vocabulary, one that is conscious of the fact that subversion of our counterterror institutions - and indeed, our very understanding of the threat we face - is a goal of our enemy in the War on Terror. The danger entailed cries out for congressional oversight and corrective action.

What is needed is a new select committee modeled after the much-vilified, but ultimately vindicated, House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). This vindication is comprehensively documented in Yale University Press’ groundbreaking ‘Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America,’ by John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr, and expanded in M. Stanton Evans’ 2009 ‘Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America’s Enemies.’ Members of Congress and their staff can only benefit from reading these studies to have a better understanding of the history of their own institution. Such a panel needs a mandate to investigate in particular the extent to which the Obama administration’s anti-American activities reflect the success of the toxic Muslim Brotherhood in penetrating and subverting U.S. government agencies and civil institutions.

Bomb found in A1 van was ‘substantial’

The PSNI have said the bomb which was found in a van on the main Dublin/Belfast road was very substantial and could have been intended for a town centre somewhere in Northern Ireland.

The discovery sparked a major security alert, leading to the closure of the road, which has since reopened.

A number of controlled explosions were carried out on the vehicle which was found at a section of the A1 motorway near Newry, Co Down.

The van containing the 500lbs bomb, which was abandoned under a bridge, had been stolen in Maynooth, Co Kildare, last January and had been fitted with false Donegal registration plates.

British army bomb experts worked on the device, which was inside a wheelie bin, until 4am and carried out several controlled explosions.

Local police commander Alasdair Robinson said the intended target of the device was unclear but it may have been destined for a town centre attack.
Had the bomb exploded, he said, it could have caused huge devastation or loss of life.

With the bomb cleared, traffic is again flowing freely on the cross-border route.

The incident comes as detectives continue to question three men over last week’s murder of Police Constable Ronan Kerr in Omagh, Co Tyrone.

It looks like things are flaring up in Northern Ireland Again. That’s a very large bomb; depending on where it was placed, it could have been a massive loss of life.

I’ve yet to see a convincing argument why this is any different from Muslim extremism.

MULTAN: A pair of suicide bombers struck a shrine in Pakistan Sunday, killing 30 people gathered there and pressing a campaign of attacks against places of worship that extremists consider un-Islamic, officials said.

The practice of praying, singing and meditating at the shrines of holy men is widespread and much loved across Pakistan, but extremists consider it a dangerous deviation from the austere Islam they espouse.

Several thousand people were attending celebrations to mark the anniversary of the Sakhi Sarwar shrine in Dera Ghazi Khan district of Punjab province when the bombers struck crowds outside the complex, said government administrator Iftikhar Saho.

A stampede followed the bombings, but it was unclear whether that caused any casualties. Emergency coordinator Natiq Hayat said 30 people were killed and 100 wounded, 20 of them critically.

TV footage showed ambulances racing to hospitals and volunteers helping blood-soaked victims.

Shrines in Pakistan range from one-room tombs in small villages to large complexes in major cities that attract thousands every day. There has been a series of bloody attacks on them, including one that killed 47 people at the nation’s most revered shrine in Lahore last year.

Local and foreign militants have carried out hundreds of attacks in Pakistan over the last three years, targeting government buildings and security forces, Western targets like embassies and hotels as well as religious minorities and Muslim sects they consider heretical.

The government and the army have tried to crack down on the militants, but have struggled to unite the nation against the threat and face persistent allegations they are protecting some extremists.

I think people have to realize is that extremists like Taliban hate different types of Muslims, such as Sufis and Liberal Muslims, far more then they do Westerners. Sufis theology, for instance, is incompatible with the firebrand Deobandi/Salafi fusion Theology that the Taliban follow.

It’s a little terrifying, especially considering this was a charity event for homeless people and women shelters.
