The people who run Twitter seem to finally be getting serious about shutting down some of the worst white supremacist and neo-Nazi accounts that have given the site a terrible reputation for hate speech and harassment.
Last month they banned a whole bunch of racist and white supremacist accounts, including Richard Spencer (who's been in the media lately gloating about helping Trump win the election).
Now we have two more big suspensions to report; a few days ago they banned @rabite, whose real name is Andrew Auernheimer, a crony of infamous white supremacist troll Chuck C. Johnson who sports a big swastika tattooed on his chest, and recently hacked into a large number of wireless printers across the country to print flyers calling for the death of children.
And today we learned that another vile racist right winger and big Trump supporter has gotten the boot: @JaredWyand, seen in the image above. Wyand had 135,000+ followers when he was suspended.
Keep it up, Twitter. This should have been done a long time ago before they turned much of the site into a place where many people feel unsafe to visit, but better late than never.
This isn't about free speech. Twitter has no responsibility to allow neo-Nazis and racist dirtbags to spread their evil ideology. We've seen exactly what happens when a large social site like Twitter refuses to deal with them because of a misguided and naïve idea of "free speech" for everyone; they run amok and ruin everything, spewing hatred and racism and harassing women and minorities relentlessly, driving decent people away.
It could be argued, in fact, that social networks like Twitter and Facebook, by failing to take action to stop the hatred and fake news spread by these people, played a big part in helping elect Donald Trump -- the authoritarian crypto-fascist president-elect who is overwhelmingly supported by neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
