Renuart facing two challengers, Davis and Kendall, in re-election bid

The Aug. 14 primary will choose one of three conservative Republicans to run in November for newly created House District 17 [Florida], which takes up all but the southern tier of St. Johns County.

On the GOP slate are St. Johns County community activist Kim Kendall, 45, incumbent legislator Ronald “Doc” Renuart, 48, of Ponte Vedra Beach, and St. Augustine building contractor Mike Davis, 46.

“I have two sons and care about my childrens’ future,” she said.

She believes creationism should be allowed in science classes, though teaching the biblical version is now against state law.

“We must allow students in science class to question whether evolution is the basis for the origin of life,” she told a Republican group earlier this year. “That’s called academic freedom.”

Kendall also favors public funding of religious and private schools.

“Public money going to religious schools is money well-spent,” she said. “I don’t think we should be supporting schools that are not based on our Judeo-Christian heritage.

She told The Record editorial board that she would not favor public funding of Islamic religious schools.
