The repatriation of remains and this overwhelming mission for finding the remains of fallen soldiers from a long ago war is something new in American thinking (the dead were usually buried where they fell). This was not done for previous wars. I think it has to do with the psychological impact of the war. It is such an unpopular national experience that we as a nation have decided we must hunt for every piece of remains there and leave nothing behind in the hopes that can lift the cursed memory of that war and it has become part of our modern culture where we carry out overseas wars but can not bring ourselves to leave the soldiers buried on those battlefields either, as if we know deep down we should not have been there or we are not wanted there even if it is to be buried there. That tells me we as a nation have not gotten over the so called Vietnam Syndrome.
