It’s not a scandal if it’s being done on purpose. As an African American woman, I’m not given to believing conspiracies directed at black people or other people of color, but the mass incarceration of men of color is a feature and not a bug in America. Only it’s not a conspiracy, it’s being done as a matter of policy to deal with undesirables and always has been. If there aren’t enough excuses to lock up men of color, they pass more laws so that more can be locked up. I honestly believe it is the main point of the so-called war on drugs. Don’t educate them, then lock them up at some point and after that even if they get out and want to do the right thing they live with the stigma of being an ex-con for the rest of their lives. Wash, rinse, repeat.
