It was a fascinating essay, but I’m disturbed by this:

My ex was calling a lot. I hadn’t pressed charges, because I didn’t want him to lose his job, and taking out a restraining order was tricky without pressing charges.

I know she was young then, but allowing a maniac to go unpunished is simply wrong.

I was once assaulted by a 17-year-old. The police discouraged me from pressing charges because they said it’ll just disappear when he turns 18. (Even though it was a good case, witnesses, and a confession to the Police.) I pressed ahead anyway. I refused to let him and his parents explain it way as a one-time “fluke” by an otherwise good kid. I figured if he assaulted me (by throwing an object from his car and hitting me as I was walking to Friday services at my synagogue), he probably does this to others.

(Unfortunately, the police were correct, he turned 18, went to Dartmouth, and didn’t suffer at all because of it.)
