I get the Chinese calls too. The number is usually spoofed to the local consulate and apparently the gist is they’re targeting immigrants with threats of criminal prosecution in the mainland over some bullshit allegation that can be made to go away with a payoff. The whole scam works because so many immigrants have strong family ties back home and the mainland Chinese government is so notoriously authoritarian and corrupt.

I mean, there’s a reason nobody pulls this shit in Japanese.
