From what I’ve read, no one was prepared for the Who’s auto destruction bit at the end of their set, either. I think I read it in Dave Marsh’s Before I Get Old, but Eric Burdon said something like “I promise you, this next group will destroy in more ways than one” as he introduced the group, being one of the few people in the audience who knew what was coming.
