It was always amusing to meet FNG’s who wanted to be on that first tank into Moscow. They were so disillusioned to find out that this was not going to happen.

The concept of speedbump to a Warsaw Pact attack was discussed in depth.

There were also a lot discussions on how long we tripwires were supposed to actually survive. And whether we might expect to also survive the resultant nuclear war.

I was also extremely happy to find out that the Soviet Union had dissolved without involving an external war. I have always put that down to many in the Soviet Leadership remembering WW2.

Same here, though I was in the Mediterranean Fleet.

Our job was to get as many aircraft in the air before we were sunk.

Listing to the BBC shortwave broadcasting live on the fall of the Berlin Wall was absolutely surreal to me.
