In each of my close encounters I came up on them too quickly, within a few feet, and they immediately coiled and rattled. Reaching up on to a high rock, stepping into a partly shady wash, both in the Tucson mountains, and dismounting a bike in rangeland outside Santa Fe. I was more bothered by the black widows in our South Tucson barrio apartment flower pots.

We were camping under the stars in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson. Woke up to find a dead scorpion in my sleeping bag. Right at chest level. I had rolled over and squashed it before it stung me.

That was the last time I camped out without a tent…
