Well, one possibility would have been to go after the intended target. I mean, if a gang of thieves plan to rob a bank, and you can’t arrest them or dissuade them, then moving the loot to another location is the appropriate move.

In this case, it would have meant (a) publicizing what was going on in real time; (b) put
a temporary hold on the election while undoing some of the damage. Unprecedented yes. Fraught with all kind of perils, yes. But letting the thieves get away with the gold doesn’t strike me as a better option.
