On the topic of Irma, I commented on this earlier. It seems interesting to me how we are desensitized to certain types of natural disasters, based on where we are raised. Talking to a friend in California, he treats earthquakes as a minor annoyance that might give him a start, whereas I would flip right the hell out. On the other hand, he NOPE’d right out of any chance of moving anywhere near where tornadoes form, whereas I would stand on my back porch and videotape one going by. Hurricane people are accustomed to packing up and taking off before a storm - or, for the hardcore, battening down the hatches and drinking heavily - whereas I would probably move inland for 9 months of the year rather than risk it. They’re all potentially deadly events and catastrophic in their own right, but the way we react to them is so different, based on how we’re raised to respect (or disrespect) them.
