It was the Super Bowl that was lost. NFL made it known the SB would be moved if voters rejected MLK Day. This, unfortunately, gave a bunch of racist fuckheads a fig leaf to say “I’m not against an MLK Holiday. I just refuse to be extorted by the NFL!”

And Arizona resorts draw a lot of convention business which was also lost, so it was not just the NFL that was “extorting” them by refusing to do business there.
