He invited a number of prominent gay Catholics, as well as a gay Episcopal bishop and the heads of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (the American nuns’ group that had earned the special ire of Benedict a few years ago), to the Pope’s White House reception.

I read somewhere that a spokesman for the Pope’s delegation had made a complaint too, but I can’t find that at the moment. Just the wingnut arglebargle.

That dance would be normal negotiation for the visit of any head of state.
