I mean I’d prefer if we had more viable parties but we don’t. I’m sorry if independents feel left out in a closed primary system but that is part of the choice they made when they chose to consider themselves independent of the parties IMO.

There also just isn’t much of a rationale for registering as an Independent, other than perhaps a psychological one. It’s not like party registration is used to penalize people or to invade that person’s life in some way (that I’m aware of). I guess the parties can use it to send information but usually you have to be rather proactive to get the attention of a state or local party apparatus.
