As “left wing” as some may presume me to be, I find this idea that the goal of education, and in particular science education, is to get everyone to accept whatever has been discover - I find this to be troubling.

Vehemently disagree. Evolution is a fact. It is about as firmly established as the theory of gravity, and instructors (like me!) have a responsibility to pass that along to students. Students do need to know that facts are NOT affected by right wing religious propaganda, social coercion, or deliberate obfuscation of what the word ‘theory’ means in scientific parlance. That does not mean you have to be a jerk in your presentation, but you do need to be firm that whatever individual beliefs are these are still scientific facts.
