I burned out on the relentless theme of dystopia several years ago, even before we got stuck living in one.

Yes, dystopia is supposed to reflect disturbing trends in current culture and intensify them to serve as a warning. Taken to excess, it loses shock value and becomes a fashionable short-hand for drama, and reflects back into the culture to normalize dysfunction. There’s probably a PhD thesis in here, on the whether the prevalence of dystopian entertainment helps feeds cynicism and depression in civic life and politics. It’s easy — and lazy — to romanticize revolution as a sexier solution than the persistent, grinding effort it actually takes to bend the arc.
