The Pilgrims founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony as Christian but the United States was intended to be free of such nonsense.

And that seems to be so easily lost on people. The Founders were like: “Okay, you people can have Churches and Christian settlements and whatever, no big deal. But we are NOT as a nation, going to declare ourselves as being under any one specific religion.”

And if you know the history between the Church and the Monarchy in Britain from the Middle Ages through the 1700s, you know full damn well why these folks wanted to keep state mandated religion OUT of their new country.
