They thought they would get away with it because the president of the United States told them he was going with them. But what he meant was, “I’m going to go watch you on cable and then pardon you all.” And he would have if had worked.

I rarely watched any Trump speech, but I remember tuning that speech in at the moment he said that he would join the protesters.

It was somebody’s analysis (Stonekettle? Beau? can’t remember now) that if he had indeed gone with them, it in fact would have succeeded, because the defenders wouldn’t have been so physically defensive against a group led by the President.
