I read about how Wisconsin had a competition to come up with a new state motto as “America’s Dairyland” seemed too bland.

entries included “Wisconsin: Gateway to Minnesota” and

“Older than Milwaukee”

but my favorite was

“Eat Cheese or Die!”

I liked those ads for that Indiana amusement park: “There’s more than corn in Indiana!”

Yes, most small towns have a church on every corner, and there’s half the state that is impoverished hollers.
