Yes, but also the fascination with what others find sexually stimulating has an element of voyeurism embedded in it.

And, it’s not just fear the other, but also fear of sex in general. Fundamentalists approaches their late antiquity magickal writings as sources of just that - magick. However, the magick won’t work if you don’t follow the forumula, and that includes 2300 year old hang-ups about sexuality in a particular group of religious leaders in one tiny corner of the planet.

Even the 1st century writings, including the NT, rarely touches this subject. I can think of only one NT reference that explicitly addresses the issue (and yes, it is condemnatory), but the whole passage condemns various practices that many people today think nothing of.

Using the religious mumbo-jumbo as a way of covering up their own fears and hang-ups (and voyeurism) is what Fischer et. al. practice.

You could write an entire book about the psychology of religious fundamentalists.
