Good theory, but it demands too much of a demonstrably unsophisticated electorate. Vangaurdism is fine for educating the voters, disastrous in selecting candidates. First demonstrate, then teach, then run stretch candidates. This is a thousand year war.

And slight shift to the left on part of the Demos will lead to endless headlines and pieces on “Democrats veer far left”, which is one of the press’ favorite topics along with “Democrats in disarray”.
