I did a quick search, but was not able to find a source for a story that I had read about cotton plantations along the lower Mississippi.

Basically, when the Union Army moved into their area, many of the plantations switched allegiance to the Union. Which led to the strange case of Confederate military expeditions dedicated to burning down Southern cotton plantations.
